THE CRISIS. [Newspaper Article] — Narandera Argus and Riverina Advertiser — 25 June 1895

THE CRISIS. The cars of the whole colony will be strained to catch the terms of the Ministerial State ment which the Premier has undertaken to make in the Assembly to day. The an nouncement will inform the people of New South Wales how the Government propose to cope with the most important politioal crisis that the colony was ever lace to jEaoa with. The Question now is not whether the community u in favor of a system of direct taxation or a system of indirect taxation— -it' Is whether the people of the country are to have the right of determining the country's taxation policy, or whether they are to hand over that right to a-body of irresponsible in dividuals who c»n lay- no claim to be con sidered as representative of ths political thought of the day. There will naturally be -a tendency on the part of various sections of tVcommMitj to view -the aetsea-cf' thB Council in the lightot tiiis'v'iew they take of thajgaltlBBlarnrta'sure over the attempt to pass'- which the crisis has ari...

SYDNEY JOTTINGS. [Newspaper Article] — Narandera Argus and Riverina Advertiser — 25 June 1895

SYDNEY JOTTINGS. By J. A. Witb tbe incoming of tlia present week (I write on the 20th inst ) the centre of politi cal attraction was found to be changed. The Assembly has been engaged during the week in putting the finishing touches to the Go vernment's financial measures, but no one took any interest in What Was being done. There was little or no enthusiasm manifested amongst Government supporters when each particular measure was carried by a large majority, nor was there shown any burning desire on the part of the Opposition to pre vent those Urgs majorities. The fact was that ou both sides it was recognised th»t not with the Government cor the Opposition lay the power of determining the success or otherwise of tbe Ministerial policy, but with . individuals who lay no c'aim to a represen tative character, but who have in the past received their warrants to legislate from dis credited Administrations. This is what Par iamentarv Government has degenerated iuto in New South 'Vales. W...

The Land and Income Tax Assessment Bill came before the Legislative Couooil on Wednesday erening for its eeoond reading. By a majority of 38 to 7 the Council refused to accept the proposal, and fixed the seoond reading for the following night The ' following night' Mr Waut was still indisposed, but was nevertheless in his place.
