Ladies' Column. BABY'S STOMACH CAN'T DIGEST STARCH. [Newspaper Article] — Eltham and Whittlesea Shires Advertiser and Diamond Creek Valley Advocate — 9 November 1917

Ladies' Column. BABY'S STOMACH CAN'T DIGEST STARCH. No baby is able to digest starch be fore it is five months old. This is a well-known fact. In view of this fact one would think that it should be an offence punished by law to offer any starchy substance for sale as infants' food. Yet such is not the case. In a recent address before the English Royal College of Physicians, Dr. S. G. Moors said : "Surely it is not too much to ask that an infant be not slowly starved to death by having administered to it a ruhotance which dces not nourish it. The mind reels before a contemplation of the num ber of infants who have feen Elowly done to death in this horrible fashion drring the past fifty years." Too few mothers know that bread, potatoes, rice, cornstarch, and such things can not be digested by a baby's stomach. If it be necessary to resort to artifi clal feeding, then carefully sterilised cow's milk can be aced, but never anything that contains starch.
