FROM OUR SPECIAL CORRESPONDENTS. BRISBANE. THURSDAY, Feb. 5. [Newspaper Article] — The Western Champion — 7 February 1880

FROM OUR SPECIAL CORRESPONDENTS. BRISBANE. THURSDAY, Feb. 5. Sub-Inspector Collopy died at Bris- bane on Monday after a long and pain- ful illness. The Government being unable to make satisfactory arrangements for the continuance of the present mail service via Torres Straits, have telegraphed to the Premier to call for tenders in Eng- land for a direct service between London and Brisbane, combining conveyance of mails and passengers. Warden Hodgkinson has telegraphed to the Mines Office deprecating the rush to the Woolgar River. He says that it is certain to cause an immense amount of suffering and loss of life. The rivers are now flooded, and there are no stores on the diggings, and of beef there is only a limited supply. All the ground at present known to be payable is al- ready taken up. The gold is patchy and wide apart. There are 400 men now on the field. The Torres Straits mail steamer Brisbane on her last trip grounded in the Arifura Sea. She was got off again after a detent...

Irish Famine Relief Fund. [Newspaper Article] — The Western Champion — 7 February 1880

Irish Famine Relief Fund. A PUBLIC meeting to make arrangements for collecting subscriptions in aid of the above Fund was held in the Blackall Town Hall on Saturday evening last. Although every pub- licity was given to the affair the attendance was extremely limited, the majority of the townspeople (and among them some holding high official positions) being absent. The thirty persons who did respond to the invita- tion, we are proud to say, all contributed according to their means, and raised the sum of £62 between them. Mr. Ranking, P.M., was voted to the chair. In a few well chosen remarks he adverted to the distress at pre- sent existing among the peasantry of Ireland, and urged the necessity for speedy and liberal relief. He read a circular which had been forwarded to him by the Central Committee in Brisbane, inviting the residents of the dis- trict to help in the matter, and appealed to the meeting to do all they could in the charitable work. It was then proposed by Mr. Ahern, ...

The Western Champion. Vita sine literis mors est. BLACKALL, SATURDAY, FEB. 14. [Newspaper Article] — The Western Champion — 14 February 1880

Vita tine Merit men at. BLACKALL, SATURDAY, FEB. 11. WE do not know bow much intellectual capacity is required in those who under take the functions of clerks in the Civil Service of Queensland; but if the com mon sense of the officials in the Post Office department may be accepted as a criterion, we should imagine the greatest idiots in the country were usually selected for the purpose. We have heard them compared to the stupid domestic fowls whoBC greatest effort of sense only enables them to run afitcr the corn when the "chick, chick" of the mistress is heard. So these Brisbane clerks, if thoy are energetic in nothing else, are wide-awake when the time comes round for them to receive their pay, which an overburdened country can now so ill afford. If the gentlemen who profess to regulate the postal service had suffi cient sense to make s few inquiries of their subordinates in the country pre vious to publishing their programmes, it is possible some sensible time-tables might be ad...

THE EGERTON BANK ROBBERY. [Newspaper Article] — The Western Champion — 14 February 1880

limiannBAncummT. THE following interesting account of the celebrated bank robbery at Egerton (taken bom the Quaiuland Timet) is doubtless new to most of our readers : TDc details of this robbery are so extra ordinary, and the incidents connected with it, in relation to the supposed and the actual perpetrator of the deed, are so remarkable, that they may be well thought worthy of record among the annals of crime. Egorton is (or was in 1869} a small town in Victoria, on the line of road between Gcelong and Ballarat, of which latter it was a sort of mining tributary. The London Chartered Bank had a branch there in 1869, under the charge of a young man named Brunn, the accountant, who was the sole occupant at night of the building, a wooden structure only. The inhabitants were for the most part miners, and storekeepers connected with them ; but there was one Bcott there, occa sionally called "Captain" and sometimes " Parson," whose occupation was that of Iay reader to (as we recollect) ...
