' Few among us are aware of the extv ordinary resources ami wi'ie spread puns of this remarkable society, which lias ex ercised in its barren domains a steady enterprising policy, not inferior to the East India Company itelf, and now occupies more than one ninth of the foil of the globe. The great business of the company is the fur trade, of which it is now nearly the sole monopolist throughout the choicest fur region of North America with the exception of that portion occupied by the Russian. The bulk of its empire is secured to it by charter ; but it is in possession of Oregon as debatable ground and under stipulations between Britain and the United Slates. The stockholders are British. The management of its affairs in America is carried on by "partners" so called, but in point of fact, ngenls paid by u portion of the nett income of the company. These are scattered in various posts over the whole territory between the Bay and the Pacific. They are chiefly Scotc...

THE OTTAWA FREE TRADER. ayi Mr. McDuflie, "am! am willing to take my humble stack of political reputation 'ipon the truth of the assertion, that the circumstances of ihe extraordinary coalition between Mr. Adams and Mr. Clay, furnish i strong evidence of the abandonment of political principle, on the part of Mr. Clay, and a corrupt political bargain between him and Mr. Adams, as is ordinarily required in courts of justice, to establish the guilt of those who are charged with the highest crime known to the law." We can prove these charges by the argument of Mr. Clay's own friends in North Carolina. Mr. Badger, the ex-Secretary of the Navy, and Mr. Clay's file leader in North Carolina, proved them most conclusively in the campaign of 1828, and he, like Mr. McDuffie, then saw no way in which Mr. Clay could relieve himself from the condemnation he so justly merited. We oppose Ilenry Clay, because he is still the advocate of a splendid government, and the most corrupt and profligate amon...
