HSfflSIS ! 3 t ? l [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Stockman — 30 January 1886

HSfflSIS ! 3 t ? l GOD BLESS THE FARM . God bless the form—the dear old farm . God bless ita every rood 1 Where willing hearts and sturdy arms Can eam on honest livelihoodCan from the coarse and fertile soil Win back a recompense for toil ! God bless each meadow , field and nook , Begemmed with fairest flowers / , And every leaf that s gently shook By evening breeze or morning showersGod bless them all—each leaf s a gem In Nature s gorgeous diadem . The orchards that , in early spring , Blush rich in fragrant flowers , And with each autumn surely bring , Their wealth of fruit in golden showers , Like pomegranates on Aaron s rod—A miracle from Nature s God . And may He bless the farmer s home , Where peace and plenty reign ; No happier spot neath heaven s high dome Does this broad , beauteous earth contain , Than where , secure from care or strife , The farmer spends his peaceful life . TJnvexed by toil and tricks for gain . He turns the fertile mould ; Then scatters on the golden gr...

YOUNG FOLKS [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Stockman — 30 January 1886

YOUNG FOLKS TWO FORTUNES . t ALICE CABS . , Bo not among winebibbers ; among riotous eaters of flesh , For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty ; and drowsiness shall clothe a man with rags , —- Prov . xxiii , 20-21 . Ill tell you two fortunes , my fine little lad . For you to accept or refuse ; Throne of them good , thc other one bad ; Now hear them , and say whieh you choose , I see by my gifts , within reach of my hand , A fortuno right fair to behold ; A house and a hundred good acres of lana , With the harvest-fields yellow as gold , I see a great orchard , with boughs hanging down With apples , green , russet and red ; 1 see droves of cattle , some white and some brown ,, But all of them sleek and well fed . I see droves of , swallows about the barn door . See the fanning mill whirling so fast ; I see them threshing the wheat on the floor—And now the bright picture has passed . I see rising dismally up in the place Of the beautiful hoase and the land , A man with...

LITERATURE [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Stockman — 30 January 1886

LITERATURE BOOK NOTICES . — The shoemaker to his last may all be very well if not carried too far . We have known one shoemaker who made a better-than-the-average United States Senator . So we have known businessmen who have become good writers and speakers . Before us is a book of travels in England by an American banker . The book is not made up of columns of figures nor is it broken into stock or broker s quotations , nor even freighted with statistics . It is full of good-natured and kindly conceived criticisms and observations on the England of to-day . It seems that our banker-author had for his companionship his twelve-year-old son . We suspect that the keen eye and curious , quick glance of the boy have helped to make the book both more interesting and valuable . The tour was on foot . The writer modestly and wittily calls his pages rambling notes , but has attempted no full account of places whizzed through in the cars . What he walked into , through and out of , he was pre...

THE TWO DESTINIES BV WlIiKIE COIiLIIVS . AUTHOB OP WOMAN IN WHITE , NEW MAGDALEN , MOONSTONE . ETO . What other person oould she havo had to think of ? I said . Is It possible , George , my mother rejoined , that you have no suspicion of what she was alluding to when she said those words ? The question passed hy me unheeded ; my thoughts were dwelling bitterly on Van Brandt and his advertisement . She answered the advertisement , of course , I said . And she saw Mr . Van Brandt , my mother went on . She gave no detailed account of the interview between them . He reminded me , she said , of what I knew to be true—that the • woman who had entrapped him into marrying her was an incurable drunkard , and that his ever living with her again was out of the question . Still , she was alive , and she had a right to the name , at least , of his wife . I wont attempt to excuse my returning to him , knowing the circumstances as I did ; I will only say that I oould see no other choice before me ...
