Stories awtl $ Mtht $ [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural — 16 May 1868

Stories awtl $ Mtht $ A RAILWAY STORY I m not a romantic man , and , if I hadl any leaning in that direction , a few Monday morning visits and reprimands from the Board of Directors wonld have cared me of the failing ; but somehow or other I have found that railway men are made of the name staff as other men , and have hearts under their uniform coats . Itwas no business of mine if , while I was at the London Terminus of the Great Division and Longshlre Railway , I examined the tickets and unlocked the carriages on the departure platform—it was no business of mine if a tali , fair girl , in deep mourning , came twice a week regularly and showed me her ticket for Westgate , return , second class . But somehow it seemed to be my business , when I had unlocked an empty carriage and handed her in as well as I could , that I should lock that door again Without banging , and then take care that no one else went in but lady-like females . Of course 1 could not help it , bat from the very f...

AGRICULTURAL [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural — 23 May 1868

AGRICULTURAL The Destruction , of Weeds . If a band of hungry Indians were to invade a . farmer s house and appropriate the provisions , it is probable that some exertion would be made to prevent the recurrence of such a proceeding . The Indian Agent would be applied to , influence would be made use of to remove the transgressors to some distant reservation , and if this could not be done , the farmer would assume the character of the strong man armed , and tne bullet and the bayonet would be resorted to to repel the invaders . Every year a crowd of rapacious weeds take possession of the tillage fields of the farmer and rob the soil of the ingredients which are the food of his crops . Some of these weeds are native and to the manor born , but others , as the Canada thistle , are adopted citizens , who claim the right of squatter sovereignty , and are satisfied with nothing less than the exclusive possession of the soil . An intelligent and successful farmer once said that very early...

AGRICULTURAL [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural — 23 May 1868

AGRICULTURAL Selection * and Condensations . Potatoes . J . S . SMITH , Union Co ., N . J ., raised last year , from five acres , over $ 1 , 000 worth of potatoes clear of all expenses . Naturally the ground was wet , but it was underdrained , and moderately manured the previous year , and there was no rot . The quality was only second-rate , but they netted $ 1 . 50 a bushel . » . Of late years farmers have had more difficulty In growing potatoes than any other crop , and many have been forced to buy their own suppIes . Still , some seem always to succeed , the same as some boys always catch fish . Generally , most of our potatoes are grown on sandy , gravelly soli of moderate fertility , and not much- south of 41 ° , while the crop is small and the quality poor south of 89 ° . It Is not uncommon , in the warmer section , to raise fair crops of tbe Long Reds , planted about the 1 st of June on new , well-plowed , and mellow ground , such as is suited to the fiat bottomed turnip , a...

VETERINARY [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural — 23 May 1868

VETERINARY Conducted by A . J . . Vnrray , Veterinary Surgeon , in Btaubien St ., Detroit , Mich ., ( Late Professor in Royal • Agricultural College , CirencetUr , England . ) . Unsoundness of Horses—The Foot . A bad method of preparing the foot for the shoe is another cause 6 i contraction . Many blacksmiths pare away the frog and bars excessively , and also lower the heels too much ; the parts which have been subjected to this process shrink and the process of contraction may thus receive a commencement . The practice of opening the heels or of mercilessly cutting away that part of the sole which is situated between the quarters , removes the horn wbich is connected on either side with the quarters . When this horn Is thinned the resistance offered to those parts is less than before and the foot gradualy becomes narrower behind . The experiments performed by the late Btacy Clark , of London , ( England , ) show clearly that the foot contracts through the Influence of shoeing . He ...

HORTICULTURAL [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural — 23 May 1868

HORTICULTURAL Culture of Strawberries . Strawberries aire backward this season oh accoqnt of the long spell of coW . ungental weather . The past Wlnte # was not very seVere on them its the large quantity of show which covered the giouhd so long , was a good , protection for them . In clayey soil the ground bus become very hard from long exposure , to the weather , and should be spaded or forked up and well pulverized , soine well rotted manure or rich compost being dug in at the same time . The soil should be perfectly freed from weeds and slightly compressed about the roots in order to preserve them from the effects of heat . When the soil between the drills or hills is well tilled and covered with , a mulch of tn ubark or newly-cut grass tbe plants will preserve their verdure and fVuitfiiliiesseven during the seasons of protracted drought . Mulches cannot be npujied to large fields of . strawberries , and the grower must be content ; with stirring the soil frequently in order to b...
