The following extracts close the arguments of the Sec . of War . in defence of the policy of removing the Indians from the limits of the States . The second paragraph quoted is worthy of some notice . It is there recomvmded that the Indians , when introduced to their new possessions , should have the same secured to them by a solemn declaration * . The southern Indians could tell what the solemn declarations of government amount to when they conflict with the views of our rulers . To how many solemn declarations violated , can the Cherokees point us ? The emigrating Indians have little to hope unless succeeding administrations have more regard to the pledges of government than the presj ent . The general details of a plan for the permanent establishment of the Indians west ofi the Mississippi , and for their proper security would require much deliberation : hut there are some fudamental principles , obviously arising out of the nature of the subject , which , when once adopted , cou...

Our Jackson republican brethren at Vandalia do not appear to understand Martin Van Buren s system of caucussing , or the art by which a few can manage the many . For tlieir , benefit we will ofler some explanations of this system . We have no doubt but his friends will take the explanations kindly . —In . the . first place , it is necessary ( as it certainly is in this State ) to establish a regency . This regency should be entirely devoted to Mr . Van Buren—should be composed of six or eight individuals , who could keep their own secrets , and who should at all times determine upon the proper measures to be adopted by the true republicans of the State . The regency , moreover , should be ever ready to aver their entire hmoceney of this thing , should it be laid to their charge . Next should come a class of county managers , who should be selected entirely with reference to their devotion to the interests of the grand master Van Buret ! , and whose adhesion should be secured by ...

JKSJE . ES'LEC'TOB , [Newspaper Article] — Sangamo Journal / Illinois State Journal — 26 January 1832

JKSJE . ESLECTOB , [ for the Sangamo Journal . ] All flesh is grass , and the glorvrrf man is as flic flowcrof the grass . Tho grass withereth and the flower thereof fndeth away , and its Fragrance that embalmed the air , so delightful to our senses , and so animating to our droop ing spirits , is succeeded by the chill clamps of winter , and the earth is naked , cold and desolate . So rise the sons of men , and grow , and bloom , and fade from earth ; and the increase of of their virtues and loveliness is driven away by the breath of time ; for all flesh is as grass , and the glory ol man is as the flower of the grass . ORLANDO was a lovely youth . He was the pride of his native village , ( he centre of every social circle , and the inmate of every family . He was beloved by all ; for all shared his benign smile ; and all had a place in the affections of his guileless heart . The generous sensibilities of his nature , vibrated in sympathy with the tender emotions of those around hi...

_ APHORISMS FROM » F . VER AI X . Reason is a lamp that sheddeth afara glorious and general light , but leaveth all that is around it in darkness and in gloom . We are always clever , with those Who imagine we think as they do . Whenever you cause a laugh , and are praised for humor , you may be assured you have said something egregiously silly , or , AT BEST , superlatively ill-natured ! Tis a pleasure to the littleness of human nature to see great things abused b y mimickry ; kings moved by Bobbins , and pomps of earth personated by Punch . Emotion , whether of ridicule , anger or sorrow , is the grandest of levellers . The man who would be always superior , should be always apathetic . The heart is the most credulous of all fanatics , and it * ruling passion the most enduring of all Superstitions . The deadliest foe to love is , not change , nor misfortune , nor jealousy , nor wrath , nor any tiling that flows from passion , or emanates from fortune ; the -i foe to love is custo...
