Care of Young Pigs [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 July 1910

Care of Young Pigs Wapakoneta , Ohio . The Berkshire World , Springfield , III . , Gentlemen : —Your request that we tell the readers of The Berkshire World how • t care for our pigs directly after weaning time , received . We are afraid if we go into detail , and tell the story of our struggle along this line , it will take too much space , and your readers will toss aside your journal in disgust . But if a few , only a few of the many thousands who will read this article are benefited by it , we will at least feel that the time taken , to write it was not lost . Previous to 190 G , the firm of G . W . Bowsher & Sons , confined their operations to The Retreat , located near Lima , Ohio . At this time , having purchased Arthur Place , the Junior member of this firm assumed the management of this farm , and to this hour no work , however hard , has changed our ideal—the perfect Berkshire . Our first step was toward a plant where fifty sows could farrow and be alone with t...

From the Meat Belt [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 July 1910

From the Meat Belt The Berkshire World , Springfield , 111 . Gentlemen : —Everything seems to have a special place o £ production or hot bed , where it thrives better and produces more perfect plants , individuals , fruits , vegetables , etc . For this reason , we simply call them the corn , belt , the fruit belt , the winter or spring wheat belt . Now Illinois , Indiana , Iowa , Missouri , Kansas and Nebraska are situated in the center of the meat belt . You see I have opened a great big field in these few short lines . I am only one of the many meat producers of the great state of Illinois and 1 will confine myself to Illinois for the time and give place ior my brother breeders from the other states to write also , I said the Great state of Illinois . I have a right to say that because Illinois is first in Berkshires and that s the meat producer I am taking for in this article . Why has Illinois done more for Berkshires than other states that are equally as great meat producers ? ...

Some Good Ones in Mr . Laking ' s Herd . [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 July 1910

Some Good Ones in Mr . Laking s Herd . Hurley , S . Dak . The Berkshire World , Springfield , 111 . Gentlemen : —I will try to write something for publication in The Berkshire World , regarding the pigs I have to sell . In my opinion I have one of the best bred boars of the Berkshire breed in the western states ; Masterpiece Baron 3 d 115827 , a son of Masterpiece 77000 , his dam Baroness Isabelle 103608 , sired by Baron Duke 50 th , second dam Francis Isabelle 94093 , dam of Rival s Last . He has proven , himself a very good breeder of uniformly good pigs . His sons are doing active service in the herds of Beito Bros ., Granite Falls , Minn ., and H . C . Edelman , Viborg , S . Dak ., besides a number of grade herds . I have a herd of sows that are good individuals with some pedigree behind them ; for any sow that does not make good goes direct to the packers with all her produce . > Among the sows in my herd are Lady Duchess B . 3 d 117431 , sire Baron Longfellow 2 d 76...

Is Mr . Spicer Right ? [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 July 1910

Is Mr . Spicer Right ? The Berkshire World , Springfield , 111 . Gentlemen : —I have read with a great deal of pleasure the articles on correct type of Berkshires , and feel sure they will be of untold benefit to beginners as well as many breeders who consider themselves long ago out of the beginner s class . It appears to me that most breeders place entirely too much stress on many minor points of Berkshires that count very little , and fail to consider the points that count the most . I see many breeders who do not consider for one minute a hog , no matter how good in every other particular , if it does not carry a pug nose , and I know , according to the best breeders of Berkshires in this country , this is wrong . They tell me they are after a well dished face and fairly short head , but no pug nose . I feel that it is very unfortunate for the breed that rre have so many conflicting opinions in reference to the type , etc . I dont believe we have n so much among breeders who kno...
