-ff - y j, ,,,' "i- --tf M r. The Si 1cm Picnic. There was a neighborhood picnic at Salem Schoolhouse, five miles northeast of Bren ham, on Friday, which was at tended by about one hundred persons. It being a gathering of farmers of the neighborhood, the subjects of discussion by the speakers were naturally enough upon agricultural and grange topics. JUDGE J. E. GRAY was the first speaker to occupy the stand. His theme was farming and finance, but as the limited time allowed him was not sufficient he confined him self to a brief statement of facts as he understood them. He regarded the occupation of a farmer as one of the most im portant and exalted occupa tions in the land;-the trouble with many farmers, in his opin ion, lies in their failure to raise a sufficiency of bread and meat for home consumption; until this state of affairs was reme died there was no prospect for, any great deal of prosperity among the planters; the sup plies of bread and meat was the all-important starting...

& - i Weekly Banned The live Stock Journal has on its editorial staff one of the best judges and breeders o( Shorthorns in the country ; and in aswertothe question, "Are Shorhoraa cattle "-hardy," that journal replies: Yes, as hardy as-aay-other breed in existence; and if properly reared with abundant feed, not even the common scrubs of the country are more so. Whatever slight delicacy is ever lound is owing to keeping them up in cold weather in too warm stables, in too close yards, and feeding too high, especially with Indian corn. To make bullocks, this will answer, but breeding ani mals, both male and female, shonld have no more grain or meal than is necessary to keep them, in full, steady growth. Oats, wheat-bran, or shorts, mixed with one-fourth Indian meal, is bestor this purpose, together with a little cotton seed meal. 'Hoots also of var ious sorts are excellent, as they tend to soften the. hay or straw in the' stbmach, and render it more easily digestible, like grass in...

A communication from Mr. B, Witherspoon, oi DeSotto parish (a well-known planter), to the Shreveport Standard gives the following description of a new variety of vetch grown on his plantation which prom ises to be ot great value to planters and stock raisers in the South. Mr. Witherspoon's at tention was directed to it some ten or twelve years ago as a new plant that stock was very found of. Upon writing to Dr. Curtis, of North Carolina, an eminent botanist, he was informed that it was one of the family of Eng lish vetchen, but he did not learn the name. In his letters Mr. Witherspoon writes as follows: "I have tried the winter, spring and tufted vetches, but they do not succeed with me. They do not mature the seed. "This variety seeds abund antly, vegetates in" August, if we nave rains, -and if a mild winter, furnishes a good pasture in January but in February, March, April and May it is superb. 'aSKfirr- -j 'eskly Banner. Safe andllruirdoas. Sinuh Mews, ' Conversing with an intelli gent gentleman from the inte rior, we asked him if he saw any immediate prospect of improve ment in the condition of the farmers. He replied in sub stance that there was np silver lining to the cloud; that the far mers, as a general thing, after the war, went into speculation ran their farms upon that princi ple, and having carried it to such an extent as to involve themselves in debt, saw no way of extraction, save by some lucky hit, which many of them strive desperately to make. Many, of 'course had lost all and been compelled to abandon the system, while a few saw their error in rime to save their property. The latter, he said, composed the class of thrifty farmers who make their provts and sions supplies at home, and are now on safe footing.
