I OFFICIAL PAPER OF BELTRAMI COUNTY. VOL. VI, NO. 41. I PROPHESY CAM E TRUE An Iowa Writer in 1893 Pictures Beltrami and Bemidji, Then Unborn, in Glowing Colors. We have a copy of the Missis sippian, published in Ida Grove, Idaho, in 1893, in which a writer tells of this then uninhabited region. His prophesy came true, and Bemidji came to give his dream a habitation and a name. We quote as follows: "The possibilities of wooded country at the head of the Miss issippi river is great. Ye writer has traveled considerably of late years through nearly every state or clime in the Union, and does riot hesitate in saying with the full knowledge of the advantages of other localities that Red Lake not only has great possibilities but greater probabilities.* New railroads are being surveyed into this country, and they will be built, too, in the near future, which will open up a new and valuable country and some very prosperous^ and well located towns will be established, afford ing fine localit...

THE Times will take second place to none in its admira tion of the genius of James J. Hill, a genius which has been of wonderful service to mankind in developing the north west, and whichJhas profited the State of Minnesota a thousand fold. Time will rank him among the greatest of Minnesota's sons, and posterity will debtor to him for the work he has done here. But no mortal is great enough to be master of the liberty of any other mortal, and the people of Minnesota are not so poor as to yield themselves to any man. Orookston Times. The Times evidently wishes that Mr Hill would take up his residence in New York, and join the colony of billionaires who are afraid of the air of the west. His hand would thorn be softer on the people than it is while he lives among them and hears them whine and c...

.1-.. 0 1 ft-- OFFICIAL PAPER OF BELTRAMI COUNTY. VOL. VI, NO. 43. BEMIDJI EOYS WIN The Basket Ball Game With Park Rapids to the Tune of 25 to 10. The youthful basket ball team of the Bemidji Athletic Club made its first trip from home last week, played its first match game and won a glorious victory over the aged and experienced team of Park Rapids. Let us shout! The club had great difficulty in finding enough members who could leave town. Several of its young players stayed at home and victory looked doubtful. The team left Friday morning, played the game that night and returned Saturday night. They say the only unpleasant feature of the trip was the sour faces made at them by their husky opponents. The Bemidji team was made up as follows: Captain Billie Boskill, right forward John Ray mond, center Harry Geil, left forward Erton Geil, right guard Arthur Brannon, left guard. R. Grimoldby acted as umpire, Joe Fenton, scorekeeper, and Thayer Bailey, timekeeper for the club. The boys ...

THE Minneapolis Times is doing a lot of magnificent work in the interest of mis chief and "the devil take the hindmost." Time was when the Times was capable of something more than love of revenge. But its mad assaults upon James J. Hill are now apparently too per sonal to reach the end sought. As between Mr. Harriman and Mr. Hill it is a small matter for the people of Minnesota to choose the man who has lived with them and is of them. And as between Mr. Hill and a Berlin syndicate, Minnesota would be crazy did she not choose that the dividends of the Northern Pacific should be paid to an American rather than to an European. And as to whether-the freights from New York to the Pacific seaboard shall be carried via Arizona or via Montana, the people of Minne sota can have but one choice. The T...

The Bemidji Pioneer. KAISER & GREELEY. Publishers Eutered in the jywtolhce at Bemidji as aocond-llusH matter. Official County and City Paper. CONCERT OF THE POWERS. THE governors and attorneys general were in session in Helena, Mont., this week nodding their heads gravely over the great railroad verger, while the world and Jim Hill wait with hushed breathing for the result of their deliberations. All the states most benefited by the Great Northern and Northern Pacific lines, with the exception of tyorth Dakota, had their head men at the conference, "In' a multitude of council there is wisdom," so no doubt the conference will result in the adoption of heroic methods for smashing the merger. That is, if the governors are of that mind. It will be noticed that Gov. Van Sant is the only executive who 1 has so far opened his mouth wide enough to emit words which intimate hostile intent. We opine that later on the executives may follow the exairfple of Gov. White of North Dakota, who e...
