Grant has recently learned for the first time a remarkable incident, which, hail it not been for the unselfish patriotism of Gen. Hanks, migiit have arrested the victorious cucer which has since been so honored by the American people. It will be remembered that in May, 18C3, Gen. Grant, made an unsuc cessful assault cn the fortifications at Vickaburg. This disappointed those in authority hero, and hi; tractions were sent to Gen.
