Alaicke mass-meeting of working men was held in New York City on the evening of the 10th, which was presid- eu over oy reter Cooper. An address was adopted, declaring that the present distress in financial affairs is due to the gradual contraction of its credit by the Government, and suggests as a remedy "that the present national debt be put, as far as possible, in the hands of the American people, and the enterprise and labor of the nation be set to work again; and that the national debt be converted into bonds payable in curren cy, and bearing a lower rate of inter est." TilE town of Abancay, Peru, was de stroyed by an earthquake on December 4. The shocks commenced at 4 p. m. on that day and continued until 5 the next morning. No less than 37 shocks occurred. Two lives were lost and 1, 500,000 worth of property was destroy ed. Abancay was a town of about 5,000 population, 05 miles from Cuzco. Govehxo...
