Executed at Stockton. [Newspaper Article] — Marysville Daily Appeal — 18 February 1860

Executed at Stockton. STOCKTON, Feb. 17th. Thomas Crawford and William Crossin, were- executed in the jail yard, this afternoon, at 10 minutes pasta o'clock. The former for the murder of John B. Lewis, and the latter for that of John V. Ford. About fifty persons were admitted to the yard, while the tops of the houses in the neighborhood, that could command a view of the scaffold, were crowded with people. Crawford addressed a few words in a low tone to the Sheriff, to the effect that he died innocent of any intention to commit murder, and that he shot Lewis in a moment when all consciousness ol what lie was doing had left him. Croissin exhibited great nervousness, but spoke freely with the clergy and those who came upon the platform to bid him good bye. Sheriff O'Neal mad the death warrant, lifter which, the doomed men were bound, hand and feet, with handkerchiefs, and at precisely ten minutes past three o'clock the drop fell, and they were launched into eternity. Crawford was kille...

The richest piece of quart/, ever in Yreka is now 011 its way to San Francisco, from Jacksonville. The quartz excitement there is unabated. Fat cattle are said to be scarce and high in this market, just now. The dry weather this winter has taken a heavy lien on stock in these parts. ♦ THE JACKSONVILLE MINES.—A private letter to a gentleman in this city, states that some of the quartz recently discovered at Jacksonville, Oregon, assays as much as ten dollars per pound! Pretty good quartz, that. Wonder if there isn't a copper lead somewhere in that vicinity'! ■ • ♦ TINDER-BOX DESTROYED. —That old frame shanty, upon which so many energetic i...

ifc ftailjr Appeal. INCIDENTS JN THE GOLD FIELDS. —From an exceedingly entertaining work just iasued in Loudon, entitled "Australian Facts and Prospects, 1 ' by Mr. Home, who commanded the regular gold escort, we have marked a passage for our columns: A miner, who had been too late for the escort, stopped me toentreatthat 1 would take down some gold for him in my pocket. 1 assured him it would burst thro', because at the pace we went nearly ali pockets with anything in them soon liecame rags. Would 1 take some notes then? I extended my hand, saying, " How much and what is your name?" "Mickey (>'- Hallorau, yer honor: £;500." 1 clapped spurs to my horse to overtake m\ troops : the amount was too large to be taken in so loose a way. Not long after another man rushed across my way—so suddenly that I nearly galloped over him—with a similar request. "It its only a few pounds said 1. "It's only a bundle of about £500," exclaimed lie. "1 cannot take the responsibility,'' said 1,...
