[ From the Philadalphia Spirit of the Times. ] The Movement of the Age. The Isthmus of Tehuantepec - The Mexican WSar - The Intentions of our Government. The following letter from the Vice President of the United States, addressed to a gentlemen of this city, and which we have kindly been allowed to copy, is on a most interesting subject, and we solicit for it an attentive and thoughtful perusal. WASHINGTON, 16th March, 1847. My Dear Sir — I am not surprised that you have been attracted by the hints and paragraphs which have appeared in the newvpapers, and only regret that, in answering your inquiries, as fully as you insist upon, I shall be obliged to make a pretty large draught on your patience. The truth is the subject is not one which can he handled satisfactorily by mere generalities ; and, in order to meet your desire and expectations, I have been obliged to examine it with somewhat more care than heretofore. It has expanded under this process, until I am quite sure I shall be...

LIFE [Newspaper Article] — California Star — 27 November 1847
LIFE. From Mrs. Butler's New Work, 'A Year of Consolation.' At morn -- a mountain ne'er to be climbed o'er, A horn of plenty, lengthening evermore ; At noon -- the countless hour sands pouring fast, Waves that we scarce can see as they run past ; At night -- a pageant over ere begun, A course not even measured and yet run, A short mysterious tale -- suddenly done. At first a heap of treasure, heaven high ; At last -- a failing purse, shrunk, lean and beggarly.

Davis Esq. to Miss Maria J., Daughter of Don Jose Joaquin Estudillo, of this place. The nuptials were celebrated on the evening of the same day with considerable eclat. The escort, the banquet, and the "featly dance," passed off the time with generous mirth and pleasantry. The new and commodious bouse of Mr. W. H. Merrill, (to be known, we be- , lieve, as the "American. House,") was thrown open for the reception of a host of friends, and how the kind entertainment was appreciated, half the town, perhaps, can j testily. How warmly we congratulated the happy newIly wedded ! Joy to the bride and groom ! Joy to the bride ! she hath pledged At the shrine where her heart hath bowed. ! She has given the faith of that stainless hand To tho heart where affection glowed ; And they need not scoff at the nam...

SECOND INDIANA REGIMENT, and the Battle Buena Vista Ed. Cal. Star, Sir: I would solicit your attention for a few moments to the enclosed slip which I send you, taken from a late number of the Indiana Sentinel. l am inclined to think the conduct of the second regiment of volunteers from that State, in the great Buena Vista battle, has been wrongfully, yet quite unwilfully represented. The article contains many incidents not heretofore intentioned of that engagement, and is the report of Maj. Morrison, who took an active part throughout. It will be seen that the Indiana regiment, not only fought well, but suffered severely, and are very unduly censured by public opinion. Its publication, will be esleemrd a favor, and you have the thanks of. Indiana Buena Vista, six miles. south of Saltillo. Mexico, February 28. 1847 At 10 minutes before four o'clock, p.m., the Mexican batteries opened the conflict by a discharge of bombs, which was promptly returned by our light artilltry. After an ex...
