SEPTEMBER 1980 \8) i$j ^ Southwest Chinese Journal 18 CAN1CE WU REPRESENTS HOUSTON AT NAJAC DR. CAROL ENG CANICE P. WU, a junior at Strake Jesuit College Preparatory, was selected as a Houston representative to attend the National Junior Achievers Conference at Bloomington, Indiana during August of 1980. The selec tion was based on Canice's outstanding contribution as the Presdient of Strag Ink., a junior achievement company. At this conference there were delegates from all over the United States who got together to learn about the Free Enterprise System and the various business related segments, like improvement of leader- ship techniques, business organization, etc. A number of prominant executive officers from corporations like IBM, Xerox, Proctor {j Gamble were there to share their experiences with these future entrepreneurs. Canice was also selected to be on the Achievers Election Com- mittee, the most prestigious committee which organized the conference, and he was responsible...

Two days had elapsed giving judges enough time to contemplate and to analyze each girl's score card, was their eventual decision..how did they measure up. Houston Municipal Judge Ted Wu as Master of Ceremo- nies had introduced the girls once more. The Youth Club's 22nd Annual Scholarship Ball was successfully executed Friday night August 15 at the Mar- riott Hotel-Astrodome. Immediately following the Miss Chinatown Houston Pageant, disc jockey Al Henson, began the ball with the theme song "Ladies Night." During the program Linda Ngao and Lisa Yee were pre- sented with the scholarship awards by Mr. Bill Quan and Mrs. Aster Joe. Linda Ngao was also crowned the 1980 Y. C. Sweetheart. Master of Ceremonies was Ronnie Joe. The 1980 Y.C. Summer Bowling League ended with the announcement of this year's top bowlers. OCTOBER 1980 t& r$) ^ Southwest Chinese Journal 12 continue from page 13 were about 25 Chinese students at the UH and about 7 at Rice. Ihe ones at Rice were all foreign born graduate students. The Houston Lodge Chinese Ameri- can Citizen's Alliance began giving scholarships to members of their youth club. In 1963, the first Chinese to receive a doctorate from Rice was Dr. HSIN MIN KUAN (physics) and the first to receive a doctorate from the UH was Dr. CHIH JUNG HSU (chemical engineering). Between 1960 and 1965, there were 19 MS degrees and 2 PhD degrees granted by the UH and 5 MS and 3 PhD degrees granted by Rice to Chinese. 1965 In 1965, there were about 100 Chinese students at the UH and 15 at Rice. In 1966, Dr. EDWARD C. M. CHEN was the first native Houstonian of Chinese ancestry to be awarded a doc- torate (chemistry) from the UH. He was the first Chinese to complete 20 years of education in Houston, and was the first Chinese son of a UH graduate to be graduated from the UH....
