Little do they know, however, that the melon has a long and distinguished history. What the Pilgrims really landed on at Plymouth was a watermelon, not a rock. The local Indians were letting several melons cool in the surf when the Mayflower showed up and, sure enough, the newcomers jumped right on top of them. X Noticing the excited condition of the natives, one Pilgrim leader advised. • "Don't cry over split melons."
