6 FEATURES SSTS.. Just Ask The Boss Westney Presents Recital Dear Boss I have a friend that has just found a new boyfriend now that she has this new found "love" I have taken a backseat to our friendship. It is like I don't even exist. I feel like I have been used. This doesn't just happen once but every time she gets a new boy- friend. I feel like I'm her re- bound. How do I talk to her about this problem? Do I just dump her as a friend? Neglected Dear Neglected Certainly do not dump her as a friend! As hard as it might seem still be her friend. This is most definitly a true test of friendship and one day she may thank you for it. Even if she doesn't you yourself will know that you are a "true" friend. I would talk to her and explain how I felt about the situation. She may not take kindly to it and not realize that that is how she is acting. This is an act of true friendship on your part. Proverbs 18:24"A man of many companions may come to ruin but there is a friend who sticks clos...

As cast and and crew worked on final set prepara- tions this week for Red Peppers Plus I caught up with Stephen for some Q&A about the show. G: I hear ticket sales are going extremely well but is there still enough time to get good tickets? SM: Ticket sales are going very well however we still have plenty of seats available for this week's performances as well as performances for next week. G: It sounds as if you really want students to come out and see this show? SM: We want as many students as possible to see Red Peppers Plus. The students are actually the first members of the audience we consider when we are doing shows. We want their support as an audience and as our peers. So we try to keep ticket cost as low as our budget will allow. G: What about the faculty? SM: Several members of the faculty come to see o...

I . This may not be the 1 1 p.m. edition of SportsCenter but this may be just as good at giv- ing you all the information you need as to what went on in the past week in HSU sports. A job well done to both the men's and women's basketball teams as they pulled off a great double as they both clinched the out-right basketball titles in the TI A A Conference this year. Both teams beat cross-town ri- val McMuny Saturday to give the men their own title (last year they had to share it) and the women who after last year playing and losing the confer- ence championship to Sul Ross State won their first title after three years of starting up the program. "This is the third best moment in my life!" stated Head Coach Mark Adams in regard to his girls winning the crown (You will have to ask Coach Adams what the other two great moments are). HSU Brand February 18 1993 16 SPORTS Basketball Teams Win TIAA Titles The title of the Hardin- Simmons Men's Basketball media guide has the words 'Strictly Business. In a business-like way the men won their very own TIAA basket- ball title last Saturday by defeating McMurry 80-63 in front of 2000 plus spectators at the Cow Palace (Mabee Complex). Also in a business- like fashion the men recorded their 21 st victory of the season which is a school record also. Leading the way for the 'Pokes in the clincher was Brian Edwards with 23 points. The Cowboys have two games re- maining on the schedule as they travelled to Sul Ross State Wednesday and they host Cameron University on Tues- day. Nothing is free in the world of sports but going to the free throw line can be charity. The Cowgirls proved that as they sunk 29 of 36 free throws to defeat McMurry Saturday 67- 56 to clinch their first ever title. Of the Cowgirls final 18 points 16 of them came from the free throw line as they improved...

HSU Brand OPTNTONl 1 February 25 1993 V7JT JUHI JLvJ.nl C3 O Letter To The Editor Dear Editor: I am concerned about the progression of our university in the area of academics and academic pursuits. Recently I came face-to-face with the reality that no organization is immune from the demands of money nor is our institution immune from the desire to receive and not give. I understand that money is necessary to make our univer- sity function however I was under the impression that the money raised or given was to be put back into the general action of educating the stu- dents here at HSU. I am a member of several organiza- tions whose intent is on an academic level of improve- ment and yet goes unfunded by the school. This is not a letter of com- plaint in regard to money be- ing spent in athletics instead of areas of academic concern. (So all of you athletes sit back down in your seats and stop preparing yourself to be de- fensive!!!) I do not feel that athletics should be placed in- ...

4 FEATURES HSU Brand February 25 1993 O'Keefe A Worthy Role Model For HSU Students By Steve Zimmer The mass media surrounds us with images every day. These images are what often tend to shape perceptions and influence what we value. From Pepsi com- mercials emphasizing youth superiority over the elderly to Michael Jordan being the reason to buy Nikes we are inundated with what is the ideal for society. It even gets so perverse that vio- lence results over sporting events such as the recent violent breakouts in Dallas following the Super-Bowl. If images have gotten society so tense that vio- lence is a result maybe it is time toexamine the heroes that media instructs us to look up to and "consider the presence of heroes among us. Though they may not be a quarterback for the Cow- boys they are a large part of our lives and may often be taken for granted. One such person is found right on our campus work- ing the cash registerin "TheSub." That person is Linda O'Keefe. On the surface an...

HSU Brand February 25 1993 6 door or placing it on the floor makes it very easy for someone to reach in and snatch. Keep it behind you.. Remember that what's in your purse is just stuff; it's never worth risking your safety. "Nincty-fivepercentofallcrime ' is property related' says Diane Horswill a crime-prevention coordinator with the Seattle Po- lice Department "The bad guys want your things not you." Al- though fighting to hold on to your bag is a natural reaction it's likely to increase the vio- lence of the attack. Horswill suggests you carry your keys and wallet on you and leave trea- sured photographs and other mementoes at home.
