Tocumwal Police Court. Thursday May 29. (Before Mr Longfield P.M.) DRUNKENNESS. Samuel Newson pleaded guilty to a charge of drunkenness and was fined 2/6. IMPOUNDING 'CASE C. S. Smith, inspector of the Corown P.P Board, was charged on the information of Arnold Shultz with having Impounded stock con trary to the provisions of the Im pounding Act. Mr J. B. Beard appeared for the prosecution, and Mr Eilmoiulson 011 behalf of defendant. i This case presented some interest ing features, but collapsed awiug to the vagueness of the information contained in the summons. Although no evidence was elicited it was ascertained from counsel's remarks that recently defendant, as officer of the Board, saw reason to Impound some cattle owned by various local residents from off cer-; tain land in Barooga parish, and' drovo them to the Barooga pound. Landholders and the public gen erally are invited to attend a meet ing to be held at Beriigan next Thursday afternoon for the pur pose of electing representatives on a deputation which it is proposed to send to interview the State and Federal Governments, on matters pertaining to irrigation along the Murray, affecting tlieaieas between Corowa and Echuca. Gorman, of Berrigau, writes on this question to the "Ad voeale" as follows :— I have no doubt there nre many people who have come to this part of the Riverina within recent years that have not heard of the Murray main canal, and it may he newi to some to learn that all the country between Burraja and Denillquln has been surveyed and levels taken, and the main canal was planned to run a few tnlles north of Berrtgan, on towards Fiiiley. AN ENTHUSIASTIC RECEPTION. - The public assembled in force at the Pavilion on Monday night to accord a welcome home to a num ber of returned men, and proceed ings were most enthusiastic. Mr L. H. B. Webb, secretary to the Welcome Home Committee, had charge of the proceedings, and was entrusted with the duty of pre senting a handsome gold medal to each soldier. In the course of his remarks the speaker referred to the ■ gallantry of the men, and gave ex pression to the deep feeling cjf thankfulness held by all the towns people tor what they have done for the Nation, and the pleasure they felt a,t their returu. GIRLS' GUILD EFFORT. AN UNQUALIFIED SUCCESS. Last Friday evening tlie Girls' Guild, associated with • the local Church of England, scored an un qualified success in their effort to raise funds on behalf of their stall to be conducted at the grand flower show to be held later in the year for church benefit. The Pavilion was most - uncomfortably crowded with dancers and spectators, and the gathering was unanimously voted to be one of the most novel and successful that has been held in the town for some years. As a re sult of the effort the coffers of the Guild will be swelled to closo on *20. The first part of the evening was given over entirely to the children, and it was a rare sight when be tween 50 and 60 boys and girls took the floor in fancy costume. Some of the characters were novel and amusing, and many of them de cidedly pretty, and at the conclu sion of the grand march thunderous applause from the crowded spectat-, ors1 benches manifested the delight of the grown-ups. The Good Old Days. The following story is told of a one time bash District Court Judge, who was on circuit in the " good old days that died," when Bheep and cattle duffing and liorse stealing waB the flourishing occupation of half the bush population :—A flash horse breaker was tried before him for horse stealing. The tamer of wild buckjumpers, who had been ont on bail, appeared in court in the flash est of flash rigouts. He had three different colored silk handkerchiefs around his neck (the acme of horsa fashion in the bush in those days), an embroidered pink silk shirt, flash bolt and sash, tight corduroy pants, top boots, and a tremendous pair of " hooks," i e. spurs. For the de fence, he entered the witness' box to give evidence on his own behalf. While offoring his version of tilt case he would every now and then wink at the Judge, with such re marks as "D'ye twig?" " D'y» tumble ?" " D'ye see P" and so on. At the local court yesterday Wil liam Edwick, owner of Arntula Station, proceeded against Phillip Head, farmer, of Womboin, claim ing jo 1° damages f. >r loss occasioned by defendant's alleged action in opening a fence on complainant's property without authority or per mission, The claim for damages was as-essed: for damages to fetce, loss of grass through a large num ber of stock trespassing, and de privation owing to the trespassing stock being previously released from quarantine and complainant not desiriug to take risks with de pasturing other cattle for a term thereafter. Mr J. B. Beard appeared for com plainant, and Mr W. R. Johnson, for defendant.
