CORRESPONDENCE. (life ,'o not necerssarily endorse, nor hold ourselves responsille for, the opinions of our correspondents.) THE DRAINAGE QUESTION. TO THE EDITOR OF TIHE GUARDIAN. SIR,-At the last meeting of the "Uppah Succle Society," the above matter was brought up for discussion, in consequence, of a letter which ap peared under the won-deplumne of "Ratepayer" in your last issue. The members of my society were unanim ously of opinion that " Ratepayel' was impudently audacious in daring to address you in support of the motion which Mr. Crowley-a gentleman for whom they have a certain amount of respect, but who, nevertheless, has not honored himself by becoming. one of them-has given notice of, that he will propose at the next meeting of the shire council to the effect that steps be taken to .improve. the,..drainage and general welfare 'd-f the township. I am not quite sire whether thi is tihe correct wording of the motion, but it does not matter whether it is or not, seeing my soc...

WOMAN SUFFRAGE. [Newspaper Article] — Healesville and Yarra Glen Guardian — 21 September 1900

WOMAN SUFFRAGE. There was a good attendance of ladies at the meeting of the Heales ville Mutual- Improvement Society on Wednesday evening, when the above question was debated. Mr. M'Callum occupied the chair. Mr. 'W. Burnside, who opened in the affirmative, said the subject was creating a deal of controversy all over the colony. .It was a progressive movement, and as they were a pro gressive society they decided to take up the question. The argument was often used that women wanted the vote to put down the drink traffic. That was a good reason why women should have the vote, as they all knew the misery caused by drink. It has been stated that women were intel lectually wealr, bit they have proved in the past that they have more ability than men. They had become doctors, which showed they could take their position with men. In municipal matters they had used good -judgmeut when -voting, and could they-not -d the same in politics. It is often said the husband is the bread-winner, and ...

A MINER IN DANGER. -0 From the gold mining district of Sofala,N.S.W., comps a true story show ing how the devotion ofa miner's mother, a Mrs. Cole, saved her son's life. "On a certain occasion," said Mr. Thomas Cole, tho saved miner, "1 got very hot working underground and came to the top to get fresh air. I caught a severe chill, shivering tits came on, and I grew quite sick with a heavy cold. A fortuighc later L was covered with a red rash, and after that I often felt faint and dizzy for days together. As I got worse every week I became alarmed and con suited a doctor, who prescribed for me. Asa curedid not result I tried many medicines, but they proved use less, and for two years I was more or less weak and sick. TENNIS. On Saturday last, some members of the Wallan Wallan Railway Tennis Club, which included Mr. and Mrs. Row (who were resident in this town for some time), visited Healesville to play the local club. The after noon was very pleasant for out door amusement, and an enjoyable time was spent. In addition to the match between the two clubs, several other sets (in which the ladies took part) were played, and the croquet green which adjoins was kept going, and the whole presented a very ani mated appearance. Afternoon tea was provided by the lady members of the local clubs. There was a good at tendance of visitors and local people to witness the contests, and they were all invited by the ladies to partake of re freshrnents, which, needless to say, -?were much appreciated. The visitors expressed themselves well satisfied with the afternoon's. outing, although they were defeated. TOOLANGI. Tuesday. [Newspaper Article] — Healesville and Yarra Glen Guardian — 28 September 1900

TOOLANGI. (Frotm our own Correspondent.) Tuesday. Railway mutters is about the only subject-vpoken vf now, and since the prospeot of this line being constructed has somewhat brightened, even the croakers are beginning- to admit that there is a chance of railway communi cation soon being established between this place and an existing line. For where the starting point shall be is the question that the Minister will ask the House to refer to the Standing Com mittee, and I have no donbt but what thrt will be a vexed question to settle. Were the Healesville people to interest themselves (if they are capable of such an effort), I believe they. could make their township the starting point, for it is said that a good gradient can be got all the way, and the department would back them up. But apart from the claims of this linie, a great effort will be made to bring it from the other side so as to serve Kinglake, where an agitation has been going on for some time ; and sis many here are indi...
