Death of Bishop Byrne. [Newspaper Article] — Riverina Times, Hay Standard and Journal of Water Conservation — 17 January 1901

of Jii.slio|t Byrne. Dr. Byrne, Roman Catholic Bishop of Batlmrst, died shortly after noon ou Saturday last. He had been suffering for some months, and his death, which was not unexpected, is deeply deplored by all creeds and classes. The deceased prelate who was consecrated Bishop of Bathurst in 1889, was born in Dublin about 1884, and arrived with the late Bishop Quinn of Bathurst in 1866. Shortly afterwards he proceeded to Maitland, where he labored for three years under Bishop Murray. He returned to Bathurst, and be came administrator for SS. Michael and John's Cathedral. The funeral took place on Sun day last. On Sunday at St. Barnabas' Church the Anglican Bishop of Bathurst in referring to the late Bishop Byrne, said the whole of the Anglican Com munion iu the Diocese of Bathurst deeply sympathised with their Roman Catholic brethren in the death of Bishop P rne. At the conclusion of iiie service the Dead March a- as played by the organist.

Mr. Miller has arranged that a public -wftcome sliall be tendered them. The returned soldiers will ))e mctt at the station by the Mayor and Aldermen, and also a large number of the townspeople, who have signified their intention to Vie present. A pro cession will be formed at the station, headed by the Hay City Band, and will proceed down Lachlan-street t,, the Council Chambers, where several speeches of welcome will be made. Explanation ijv Mn. Ba«7'ox. A good deal of doubt seems to exist among commercial men regarding tlie question of Customs duties between tlie states. Mr Barton explained to-day that 110 alteration has yet been made in connection with the collections of the Queen's duties, and that it will be impossible for any new duties to be imposed before the meeting of the Federal Parlia ment. Under a condition of the Commonwealth Act, oil the establishment of federation, the collection and control of tlie duties of the Customs and ex ercise passed to the Executive Government, and uniform duties of customs are to be im posed within two years after the establishment of the Com monwealth. Until the im- , position of uniform duties the Government will cre dit to each state the re venues collected. Each state will be debited with the expen diture therein of the Common wealth incurred .solelv for the maintenance or continuance as at the time of transfer, of any department transferred from the state to...
