Fire Aboard Ship Outbreak in Melbourne EXTENSIVE DAMAGE Melbourne, February 14. [Newspaper Article] — Geraldton Guardian — 14 February 1948

Fire Aboard Ship Outbreak in Melbourne EXTENSIVE DAMAGE Melbourne, February 14. Thousands of pounds worth of dam age was caused by a tire which broke out between decks aboard the 7,800-ton British, motor ship Chyebassa in dry dock to-day. Terrific heat buckled plates on the , side of the ship and cabins amidships became unbearably hot as their steel floors and bulk heads wore heated up. The tire started in Xo. 3 hold, which is being reverted to refrigeration. Workmen had been installing electrical equipment, but no one was in the hold when the tire broke out. A ship's engineer saw the#smoke at 12.20 p.m. and gave the alarm. The Lascar crew and European officers manned the ship's hoses and attempted to get through the smoke to the lire. Extra hoses from the shore were haul ed aboard. Firemen, with respirators, took foam units into the blaze. Newly installed cork insulation in No. 3 hold and timber and packing is thought to be alight.

Airport Acquisition Settlement Anticipated NEED OF CONTROL Melbourne, -February 14. A settlement is expected in the air |-ort land acquisition dispute. Under this the Commonwealth would get the land it seeks and would guarantee security of tenure to airline companies occupying leasehold properties on air ports. The management of Australian National Airways said to-day that they had no objection to selling if security of leasehold tenure were given. The Director-General of Civil Avia tion (Air Marshal R. Williams) agreed to-day that the view expressed by A.N.A. would have to be considered iu conjunction with the acquisition pro posals. 'We have no intention of pushing the operators eut,' lie said. He warned that the time would come when all activities not directly concerned with the day-by-day «»iieration of airlines would have to be shifted from the air ports. 'We cannot afford to let our airports grow up without any control,' he said. : ;.; .
