The North Australian. FRIDAY EVENING, APRIL 18. [Newspaper Article] — North Australian — 18 April 1884

FRIDAY EVENING, APRIL 18. FOLLOWING closely upon , the action of the upcountry Progress Association in seeking to haye thé Chinese restricted from Northern Territory goldfields, we find contractors in our own immediate neighbourhood bestirring themselves to have the same race debarred from par- ticipating in the many thousands ex- pended annually on the public works of the country. Early this week a meeting - of contractors was convened by Mr. H. Ruthven, for the purpose of considering the advisability of petitioning the-Go- vernment to exclude Chinese from ten dering for the public works of the colony. The meeting, however, did not appear to take unanimously to the pro position, and consequently nothing definite came of it. Notwithstanding. . this coyness it is safe to presume that before many months are gone, the same question will have to l>e considered iii a truly serious manner, and it will then» perhaps, be discovered what good has. . been caused by tarrying. The argu- ment...

OPEN COLUMN. TO THE EDITOR. [Newspaper Article] — North Australian — 25 April 1884

OPEN COLUMN. LETTERS to the Editor must be', couched iu l-csjieetful and simple language', and as concise as possible. Ju every case the writer's name is required, not necessarily for publication, but ' as a guarantee of good, faith.j . ' To mn EDITOU. ". DEAÏI SIB,-A fortnight ago an article appeared in your contemporary's "îsews and 2s ott« " column which I cannot let slip without expressing my opinion of it. The ai'ticle in question had a twofold object, viz., to say a word in favor of the Pollard Opera Troupe's performance at the Town Hall, and to make some spiteful and totally uncalled-for state- ments reflecting on the members of our local Dramatic Club. The paragraph struck me as showing the essence of hypocrisy in writing, for, while the N. T. TIM KS professes in strong language to be heart and soul with any societies that are formed here for the benefit of the public, it in almost the same breath tries its utmost to blast the only one that really makes good use of the twelve...
