WE have for some time been surprised that amongst our various appliances to meet the contingences of life, that most valuable implement, a fire-escape, has been overlooked or else considered of too small importance to be necessary. Two-story, aye, and even three-story, buildings are increasing, and we fear that sooner or later some distressing incident will occur which will argue, in most painfully convincing language, the necessity of such a machine. All will call to mind the thrill of horror which was occasioned by a fire iu Dub lin a few years since, where some six persons were seen to perish miserably when their lives might have been saved by a fire-escape and intrepidity, the latter was not wanting but the mechan ical aid to the fireman's courage was, the unfortunate creatures were burnt to death in the presence of hun dreds of brave men, who, however large their sympathy and heroism, could do nothing for them.
