A REPREHENSIBLE PRACTICE. [Newspaper Article] — North Melbourne Courier and West Melbourne Advertiser — 24 April 1896

A REPREHENeSIBLE PnACTrE.-The North Melbourne Council have decided to offer a reward of £1 for the conviction of any person for emptying earth, gar bage, or any offensive matter on vacant lands in and around the town. This is a wise step, and it is to be hoped it will be effective in abolishing a nuisance and source of danger. A NEW NUISANCE.-Of late, steam merry-go-rounds have been introduced in -Melbourne and suburbs, and are in the habit of taking up their positions on various allotments of vacant land. They are all equipped, however, with steam whistles, which they blow at short--interalss- -for-some-reason _or another, and which are anything but a desirable addition to other nocturnal choruses. There may be a necessity to have some sort of sounding signal in connection with the merry-go-round, but something less far-reaching and ear piercing than the above method might surely be contrived. A FEATURE IN CHRYSAsNTEMUMS. We have been shown a remarkably fine bouquet of the above fl...

CATHOLIC BAZAAR. -4----- THE Bazaar in aid of St. Mary's new .C0. Church, in the North Melbourne Town Hall, has been visited by large crowds during the past week-without fear of contradiction it can be truly said that never has such a popular Bazaar been held in the district-all creeds and classes have joined hands to make a inal and united effort-to liquidate the debt on a building which stands out as being the most magnificent and finely proportioned edifice in the City of Melbourner exteriorly; and as to the beauty and richness of the interior. it requires to be seen to be fully appreciatd7 - The general topic of conversation has been the excellent and thoroughly refined pro grammes presented each evening during the week. J-dgifg ronfmthe crowded condition of the Hall on each of the " children's nights," it is evident that these performances are becoming more popular at each repetition, and the unanimous verdict is that a more finished exhibition or popular display of juvenile pe...

A cocsERT in aid of the funds of the Hotham Hill Wesleyan Band of Hope was held in the Wesleyan schoolroom, Brougham-st., on Monday last, 20th inst., in the presence of a fairly largo audience, and it proved to e--a- decided success. AN IMPORTANT INDUSTRY. [Newspaper Article] — North Melbourne Courier and West Melbourne Advertiser — 24 April 1896

AN IMPORTANT INDUSTRY. SOME time ago a trial of an oil extract ing and feed-cake mill took place in North Melbourne, a report of which ap peared in this and other papers, but owing to the highly technical character of the proceedings, comment was prac tically foregone, except in the agricultu ral columns of the dailies, who employ writers with a special knowledge for such work. The result of tle trial, however, was understood to be satisfactory, and several Parliamentary gentlemen and others, speaking at an impromptu colla tion after the proceedings, expressed themselves as delighted with the mill, and predicted for it a successful tour through the Gippslan?_andcother dis tricts. This was all very good ; but an expert writing to the press a few weeks ago, and possessing, as he alleges, twenty years' experience in Holland--both in cultivating and manufacturing oil cake- stated that the seeds are not properly treated in this colony in cultivating, since if it was we should have a much...

NORTH MELBOURNE FOX TERRIER COURSING CLUB. Tie above club held its second meeting at the Ascot racecourse on Tuesday (Eight Hours' Day), which, considering a certain adverse circumstance mentioned below, was very successful. The weather, though remarkably threatening, kept up, excepting a few showers towards the fall of the afternoon. About 12 o'clock Sergeant O'Meara, of Flemington, gave Messrs. J. Little wood, one of the vice-presidents, and G. Goddard, lion. treasurer, a little bit of a surprise by inourming them that the meeting could not go on as it was illegal. Messrs. G. W. Toll and G. Goddard thereupon interviewed Mr, J, L.
