GENERAL NEWS. The case of Charles Thorpe was men ioned in the Cabinet on Moniday by Dr. Dobson, who referred to the fact that His Excellency had remoitted to him the pctitione submitted on behalf of the pri oner, and also tile opinion of Mr. Purves. No decision was arrived at as to tlhe advice rhich should be tendered to HIls Excel lency, but Ministers generally expressed the opinion that there are no grounds for recommending that there should be a re nission of the sentence. On its journey on Saturday evening it experienced a severe shock, and the driver palled up to ascertain the cause, when it was found that two ironbark rails had been placed across the line at n placo where the embankments are 8ft. high. ANOTHER RAILWAY ACCIDENT. [BALLARAT COURIER, 9th MAY.] [Newspaper Article] — Bairnsdale Advertiser and Tambo and Omeo Chronicle — 11 May 1882

ANOTIEIIt RAILWAY ACCII)ENT., ['ALLAOAT COUltIERt, 9th )MAY.] Some concern wans manifested last night at the non-arrival of the Maryborougll train, but at about half-past one this morning, when it arrived an hour behind time, it transpired that a serious col lision had occurred at the Tourello sta tion between the up train from Ballarat and the down train frotm laryborough. It appears that on arrival at Tourello, the train fromn Maryborough was first in, and was in the act of backing to get on to the siding when the Ballarat train came up and the two collided. The effect was that the passengers in both trains were thrown about in the car riages, soene of them sustaining severe injuries, but, so far as we could learn last evening, none are likely to be of a fatal character. The concussion, how ever, was so great that the engine con veving the train from Ballarat had its bulfess entirely smashed, and one of its outside cylinders entirely thrown out or position, and the steam escaping ...

The Advertiser. PUBLISHED EVERY TUESDAY, THURSDAY AND SATURDAY MORNING. Bairnsdale, Thursday, May 11, 1882. [Newspaper Article] — Bairnsdale Advertiser and Tambo and Omeo Chronicle — 11 May 1882

T'hee Advertiser. PUBLISHED EVERY TUESDAY. THURSDAY AND SATURDAY MORNING.     Bairnsdale, Thursday, May 11, 18S2. ABouT two or three months ago, at one of the meetings of the Bairnsdale Pastoral and Agricultural Society, 'Mr. Charles Seehusen advocated the desir ability of the monotonous routine of the business being varied by the reading of papers or essays on subjects appertain ing to pastoral and agricultural pursuits The proposition was, at the tinie, con sideied premature, and it was likewise considered injudicious to amalgamate a debrting society with the business trans actions of' such an important associa tion as an agricultural society. Although the subject ventilated by Mr. Seehusen cannot claim .originality, we must give that gentlemen all due credit for his perspicuity, and for an evident desire to advance tiheinterest of the society, and to do good to th?e community generally, by an interchange of ideas on subjects connected with such important...
