A BOSTON PRINTER. [Newspaper Article] — Balmain Observer and Western Suburbs Advertiser — 14 February 1885

A BOSTON PRINTER. John Stetson, manager of the Monte Christo Company, is also the proprietor of one of the largest show-printing es tablishments in the country. It is located at Boston. Of Stetson's ex perience in the printing business there is a hard, wicked, cruel story told. Stetson occasionally indulges in -wild, uncouth, unheard-of methods of spell ing, not becanse ho is phonetic or eccen tric, but simply because, of liis slight acquaintance with the mode of spelling most in vogue for several generations. Once bis foreman brought in for him to examine a proof of a red, green, blue and yellow three-sheet poster of one of Stetson's own sbiwsj.and for which lie had famished the 'copy.' Stetson looked ft over carefully,, and, poin ting to sslfij' reprovingly : 'That isn't' 'ihe way. I spelled that word.' ' ,f; I kno^.r .'it, replied the foreman, ?' but y. ix didn't spell it right. But. be. that as it ' niay, if I am over, going to breathe my experi ence -to tlie world, now. is tbe accepted time. The grand jury will be in session shortly, and if .1 wait, the opportunity, will pass for ever. . Now, anybody that don't want to hear what I am going to say may get out. I was sitting in the Tit-Bits office last week, with nothing in particular to do exccpt to scratch tlie paint off the desk with my boot heels, and expecto rate anon into the waste-basket. Busi ness was dull in -consequence of the dull city — and everything that would help-to kill time was welcome. That is' why the bo...

THE BUSH—GRAND OPERA-HOUSE—OTHER PLAGES. [Newspaper Article] — Balmain Observer and Western Suburbs Advertiser — 14 February 1885

-THE BUSH— GRAND OPERA HOUSE— OTHER PL AC biS.'; ? There is always something the matter wiih Italian' opera.'-' No conipiny' that ever -played in. any theatre, in any age, in ;ajiy,.coiiutry ever got through even! the' briefest engagement without disnp- ' pointing the piiblic 'and swapping an oid opera for a new one. . No manager of Italian operli ev- r produced all'tho pieces he promised, or Jhosa 'he' did produce as .he advertised them. No prima dptitia that ever lived succeeded iff singing every part a- cording 'o contract. No tenor ever compromised his dignity or tliis, vanity by^ing* in good, voice 'b very tijmn he was wanted. And the: Italian opera is all, tenor and soprano. As a consequence the insignificant (as consid ered by the two leading artistes) con tralto is always at her post, the baritone generally has to sing, even if he is sick ; and the. basso can, as' a rule, manage to carry his part without breaking down. The average grand prima donna has sold oranges on the st...
