In my last letter from Upper Waipa, dated 1 5th April, I mentioned that a letter was said to have come from Taranaki stating that a body of natives and the troops were in close contiguity. I have good authority for saying that the answer given by Rewi was 'Sight.' ?When the letter reached Hangatiki the people there modified it; they said, 'Give ud Tataraimuka. but place our vonaus (the fleeced Maories) on the land at Waitara. fTikaokao, the fighting chief of Ngatimania poto, is at Taranaki, and we expect every day to hear that a collision has taken place. On the 23rd instant, a party of natives Came from Hangatiki to Kopua (the Wes leyan miss:on station) to enforce the new law in reference to ' broken bottles' (disaffected white men) ; the Pakehas were summoned to appear instantly before them. They were re quired to pay £1 as a poll tax for this year, to acknowledge the authority (mana) of the Maori king, and to dis...
