NEWS BOY'S PICNIC. [Newspaper Article] — The Elsternwick Leader and District Record — 21 January 1888

NEWS BOY'S PICNIC.       THESE youngsters to the number of about 270 had a very interesting time at   Halfmoon Bay on Tuesday last, at the beautiful grounds of Mr. H. Sparks J.P., which were kindly placed at their dis- posal. The day being all that could be desired, the provision good and abundant, the programme of sports varied extensive, and the prizes ample and suitable, the whole proceedings were, in consequence, of the most enjoyable character. Stirring strains of lively music were discoursed during the day by the Gordon Cadet Corps' Band. These performers looked very attractive in their gay uniform, and played in a style that would have done credit to a senior band. The different races were eagerly and well contested, and the prizes, which have to be distributed, were of the most suitable description, consisting mostly of suits of clothing, and pairs of boots. Two drags of four horses each were freely placed as the disposal o...

Local authorities are very greatly interested in keeping their district as free as possible from this pest. People have a.wbolesome dread of coming to,'or staying in a fever-striken locality. The conse quence is that where this disease gets a footing a place soon looses its attractions, goodname and population, with a consequent loss of revenue. Local health officers, who should ever be vigilant, ought to be doubly so at this harvest time for death. We are pleased to see that the matter is re ceiving earnest and general attention. But it cannot be too clearly under stood that the vigilance of the local utliorities must necessar3 be futile, in...
