"MANIFESTO. "TRANSVAAL NATIONAL UNION. "TO THE PEOPLE OF THE TRANSVAAL! [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 22 May 1896

' MANIFESTO. ' Transvaal National Union. ' to the people of the transvaal ! ' If I am deeply sensible of the honor conferred upon me by being elected Ohairman of the National Union, I am profoundly impressed with the responsibilities attached to the position. The issues to be faced in this country are so momentous in char prior to the holding of a public meeting a review of the condition of affairs should be placed in your hands in order that you may consider matters quietly in your homes. ' It is almost unnecessary to recount all the steps which have been taken by the National Union, and I shall, there fore, confine myself to a very short re view of what has been done. The con stitution of the National Union is very simple. The three objects which we set before ourselves are : (1) The main tenance of the independence of the Republic ; (2) the securing of equal rights ; and (3) the redress of griev ances. This brief but comprehensive programme has never been lost sight of, and I thi...

The Transvaal Difficulty. JAMESON'S RAID. WAS IT A BLUNDER III. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 22 May 1896

The Transvaal Difficulty. JAMESON'S RAID. WAS IT A BLUNDER (By Our Very Own Special.) III. Speaking at a large public meeting at Johannesburg in December a pro minent resident said, ' Within three days of arrival here, gentlemen, I was arrested and fined thirty-seven shil lings for laughing ao a policeman.' It would be tedious to retail the many disabilities under which the Ultiauuora lauureu m uub iiauavaai, but that little incident aptly illustrates the homely manner in which the Boers play the role of governing power. They honestly regard them selves as paramount in South Africa, and the great body of them would, I believe, welcome a war with England, the outcome of which is to them a certainty. And there is some reason for it being so, inasmuch as they have been allowed to have things all their own way so far. But the condition of affairs as set forth in the now famous manifesto of the Transvall National Union cannot long continue. As this reviews the whole situation I give the ...

At Oxford, some twenty years ago, a divine in one of the colleges limped in his walk. Stopping one . day at a railroad station, he was accosted by a well-known politician, who re cognised him, and asked him if he was not the chaplain of the college at such a time. The doctor of divinity replied that he was. 'I was there,' said the interro gator, ' and I knew you by your limp.' ' Well,' said the doctor, ' it seems that my limping made a deeper im pression on you than my preaching,' ' Ah, doctor,' was the ready reply, 'it is the highest compliment we can pay a minister to say that he is known by his walk rather than by his con versation.'

Hordern Brothers. CHEAP CLOTHES. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 29 May 1896

Hordern Brothers. CHEAP CLOTHES. There's a big shop in Pitt-streec, Sydney, where they are booming Freetrade. They build suits of cloches for 45s that they used to charge 55s for when the duties were paid. They make 'em of serge, sergerette, tweeds, and suitings. Quality undoubted. Fancy getting a suit made to measure from a large selection for 4os. They make a dress-suit for four guineas and upwards. It looks as if we were going to get our clothes cheap on account of the tariff, so if we can cover our auger with decent oioihos we won't be so badly off. If we have 4os left after paying our taxes we can look re spectable ; if not, we can look the other thing. Country residents wishing to share in the reduced prices can obtain full par ticulars, patterns, self-measure forms, and tape, by sending a postcard, addressed Hordern Brothers, Pitt-street (only), Sydney. To promote a feeling of interest in colonial industry a business suit is made to order, of N.lS.XV. tweeds, for the modest s...

The Tick Plague. TO THE EDITOR " S. S. AND S. JOURNAL." [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 29 May 1896

The Tick Plague. TO THE EDITOR ' S. S. AND S. JOURNAL.' Sir, — I notice you are keeping bhis subject well before the cattle-men of New South Wales by letting us know every move that is made to prevent the spread or for the eradication of this pest. I am strongly of opinion that there is but one chance, and that is by a strict quarantine and very careful inspection. In dealing with this pesb it appears to me that inocula tion is but a forlorn hope of ridding it, as the Queensland tick is a real live insect and can live. I have no doubt, without animal blood as our New South Wales ticks do ; yet when they get on cattle it is quite possible that they grow much stronger and increase much faster. The dipping in cotton oil, or any other oil, would be the means of clearing them off cattle for a time, but in this hot climate we cannot expecb it to last many weeks ; therefore a draft of cattle, dipped for the purpose of cleansing them of ticks preparatory to starting them for New South Wales...

Federation in Art. OUR EXCHANGE PICTURES. A REMARKABLE BOOK. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 29 May 1896

Federation in Art. OUR EXCHANGE PICTURES. A REMARKABLE BOOK. Few books come to this office that are more truly suggestive than this last book on art that has just arrived. It is a ' catalogue of the second inter change of oil-paintings and water- \ color drawings exhibited in the Syd- j ney, Melbourne and Adelaide Gal- I leries, April, 1896.' The catalogue is | issued ' By Authority of the Trustees | of the National Galleries of New \ South Wales, Victoria and South Aus tralia.' It is ' Prinoed and Published by Charles Potter, Government Printer, Sydney, 1896. Price, 2s 6d.' There, now, is the whole story al most at a breath, but I ought to have smuggled all those facts away in a footnote. I hate facts ! The significance of this quaintly original catalogue lies in the fact that it is strictly a federal book. It is a sweet and truly refreshing sign of the times. The artists have federated their galleries before the politicians have federated their chambers. But law and politics are p...
