LOCKYER SHOW. [Newspaper Article] — Queensland Country Life — 12 June 1901

LOCKYER SHOW. The magnificent weather which graced the time of holding the annual show of the Lockyer Agricultural and Industrial Society, attracted a somewhat larger attendance than usual, and although the dates were peculiarly unsuitable for the settlers of the district to spare the amount of time necessary to make a large display, the exhibits were of a very high order, and a great credit to those who loyally supported the Society. As was to be expected from such a magnificent farming and dairying district, these sections were the most prominent, both in the number of entries and the attention from visitors. LAIDLEY. Toowoomba Line, 51 miles from Brisbane Mr. Martin, Cawdor, Toowoomba, carried off the i st prize for a wonderful collection of farm produce, which occupied almost half of the temporary building in which the large lots of farm produce were displayed. Mr. McCartney, Forest Hill, had a fine trophy of pressed Hay, and carried off prizes in this sec tion, and also> for...

MINING The Minerals and Precious Stones of Queensland. INTRODUCTION. [Newspaper Article] — Queensland Country Life — 12 June 1901

The Minerals and Precious Stones of Queensland. INTRODUCTION. jHE area of the gold and mineral fields of Queensland, com prises fully one-eighth of the surface area of the State, a total of 53,134,373 acres. It is not asserted that every acre of this, vast territory contains the precious or other metals or gems, but that the various areas proclaimed as being re served for mining purposes only, denote a probability of mineral wealth being unearthed; therefore, the land should be reserved for mining purposes, and not allowed by the rather too liberal Land Acts of Queensland to become freehold property, thus debarring an examina tion cf the land by miners. That the probability referred to is reasonable in the extreme comes well within the knowledge of any who have any experience of these fields. Upon the great majority of the fields, one h"as scarcely to- travel a mile without seeing evidences of the prospectors' work, while the enormous value of the mineral produce of Queensland, sinc...

Queensland Smelting Company's Works, Aldershot. [Newspaper Article] — Queensland Country Life — 12 June 1901

Queensland Smelting Company's Works, Aldershot. pON after the night mail from Gladstone passes Colton Junc tion, and swings away southward toward Maryborough, a scene often occurs which carries the memory back to the night run of the Irish mail through the furnace-lit Black Country in South Staffordshire. Miles away a glare is seen, as if the forests were afire, and passengers, not asleep, gaze out as Aldershot is reached, upon a view unique in Queensland. To the right, great columns of flame from a multitude of shafts shoot upward to the sky, glistening the roof tops, and marking the position of the enormous works of the Queensland Smelting Company, the only one of their kind in the State, and which, since their erection in 1889, have aided the development of mining in Queensland to an enormous extent. If it be daylight when the train draws' up at the station, trucks may be seen going into the company's siding loaded with bags of auriferous and other ores frornl some lonely mountai...

The Minerals and Precious Stones of Queensland.—Continued. GOLD. [Newspaper Article] — Queensland Country Life — 12 June 1901

(jSBg fjlmerafs aad Freeioas of ©aseagfai'iel.-Continued. GOLD. From the rugged McPherson Ranges which mark the boundary line between Queensland and New South Wales, to the sea-washed isles of Torres Strait, and on westward to the Northern Territorry, the precious metal has been found in almost all the thousand streams and gullies of Queensland that come from the mountain ranges. Nearly all the rivers with their tributaries, that flow through Queen* land, have given their quota towards the fifty million poun Is' worth of gold that has been produced from the colony since the first discovery fifty years ago. Some of the fields are yearly increasing in importance; whilst others, lacking the attention of their sister fields, but equal in possible richness, are waiting the mining investor to open up their rich treasures. The list of the proclaimed goldfields is a sufficiently long one to denote the wide spread occurrence of the metal, without giving the thousand® of names of the localiti...

Exhibitions of the Month. THE BRISBANE NATIONAL. EXHIBITION. [Newspaper Article] — Queensland Country Life — 12 June 1901

Exhibitions of the Month. THE BRISBANE NATIONAL. EXHIBITION. Owing to the visit of their Royal Highnesses the Duke and Duchess of York to Brisbane, it was thought advisable from several points of view to hold the annual Show some months earlier than usual. It was generally understood that there would be a large influx of visitors from all parts of the State to welcome the Royal visitors, and advantage was thus taken of the opportunity to enable the Royal couple to see some of the products of the State, and1 at the same time of drawing a larger number of people than would have otherwise attended. The attendance on the opening day was almost a Messrs. McLennan & Co'js Machinery Exhibit. record, but the takings on the two subsequent days showed a remarkable falling off as com pared with previous years. To a great extent, however, this may be attributed to the number of counter attractions that were taking place, including the Review at Lyttojri arid the Fire works in the Domain...
