Menangle. [Newspaper Article] — The Campbelltown Herald — 9 March 1898

Menangle. A social is advertised to take place in the local hall on St. Patrick's night (1 7th March), the proceeds of which are to be devoted towards reducing the debt on the Roman Catholic Church. The catering, as usual, will be in the hands of the Menangle ladies, which is a   guarantee that the creature comfort of visitors will be well provided for. Miss Lizzie Payten and .Mr. P. Quirk have been appointed hon. treas. and hon. sec. respectively, and are work ing assiduously to bring the affair to a success ful issue. Mr. Lamb, night-officer at Menanglc, had the misfortune to lose a three-year-old child on Monday, death being due to an attack of diph theria. Some smart work (says the Lismore Star) was done at Messrs. Hicks and Co.'s bacon curing establishment here this week. Local and General. [Newspaper Article] — The Campbelltown Herald — 9 March 1898

Local and General. I bare a nice lot of quinces for sale at 1s 6d per half case.— J. Rigelsford, Campbelltown. Owing to the lack of support by the public, it is probable that the Thilmere Home for Consumptives will be closed within the next four or five months. A Wellington farmer went into a public house in that town last week, and called for drinks for himself and a friend. In payment for same he tendered a cheque tor £800, which he had received for his crop of wheat. — Ex- change. The extent of the loss of stock and damage to property on the Camden Park Estate, caused by the recent flood, is estimated at £3000. Many of the tenants are now busily employed in re-erecting the fencing carried away by the flood waters. Mr. William Beach, the famous scullier, is as enthusiastic and successful a dairy farmer as he is oarsman. He is vice-president of the Dapto society. Mr. Peter Kemp, another ex champion, is also engaged in farming, having a fine estate on the Hawkesbury and Colo Rivers....

Stray Notes. [Newspaper Article] — The Campbelltown Herald — 9 March 1898

Stray Notes Our popular, hairdresser and champion shaver had a close shave last Sunday from being quali fied for canonisation, but luckily, through his agility, he is not St. Joseph yet ; but he was within a shave of being so. He was coming home from church, and was all conversation with one of our policemen, when a horse that had got his winkers off bolted and came down at a furious pace, lathered all over, and charged   for the pair. The policeman, as policemen generally, do in time of danger, "slithered" — he was not there. Our barber, quick as light ning, shot aside, just in time to save himself from instant death, the wheel shaving his ribs and skinning his shin. It was a close shave — a hair-breath escape. Excepting a shock to his nervous system, our barber is as well and as jolly as ever. One of our aldermen has been finding fault about cattle straying in the streets, but I am of the opinion that they are kept freer since our present inspector was appointed than ...

The Proper Care of Milk Gans. [Newspaper Article] — The Campbelltown Herald — 16 March 1898

. Th» Froper Gan of Milk Oaas. Thet should be kept clean and free from rust ; they should be washed as soon as pos sible after being UBnd. Rinse first frith cold water, then scrub thoroughly -with a brush, both, inside and outside, using warm water (almott hot), or, better, , h good soapsuds. Give particular attention tu tbe yearns, and do not forget the onUidos. Yoit inow the in side is often judged by the outside, tiuisn with scalding water— not just hot water. Tarn your cans upside down lung enough only to allott them to drain ; then leave them right Bide up or on a board. The hut air or steam rises and has no escape, cousequently con denses in the cans and sonra. Much milk, otherwise well cared for, is often tainted from no other reason. A rusty can should not be used, as it imparts a foreign flavor to milk. These Are hints which, an expert dairyman sends for the guidance of others who are work ing on the same line as he is.

A MUSICAL EDUCATION For a Crown ! The above heading will, of course, appear to most people at the height of absurdity, yet the absurdity u more apparent than real It goes without saying that a finished musical education in the regular course cannot be had for a crown, or even with several hundred additional crowni ; but can it be truthfully said that the person with a sufficient knowledge of musio to play accompaniments on the piano or organ, to all the popular aud standard 80DUS of the day has no musical education ?
