ROMANCE AND TRAGEDY AT SEA [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Gazette and Eden District or Southern Coast Advertiser — 28 April 1866

ROMANCE AND TRAGEDY AT SEA (From the Dundalk Examiner.) The Earl of Erne steamship arrived in Dundalk onl Thursday evening last, and the intelligence she conveyed] Was sad and depressing. There Vas unnsiial bustle at the' ' quay on Monday evening prior to the departure of the nteamboat for Liverpool. A young man about twenty\x=req-\ three years of age Was observed to run hastily on board. There was something wild-iooking in his aspect. He ba(£ been wrangling with the gatekeeper about his trunks, and -he was now on board and was bound for the far West. The night was dark and tempestuous, the sea roug, and | except when at intervals the moon peered through the | clouds, the 6cenc resembled only the ordinary winter passage. The young man who had thus seenred his seat on the deck was Patrick Shevlin, a native of Dromore, in the j county Tyrone, and to all appearance wasvery respectable, being, it is said, a well-to-do young farmer. For some time past he had been paying his addresses to ...

Oce leading article in last weeks' issue, through not being explicit, leaves room for misinterpretation. We therefore consider it necessaty more fully to explain it\x=req-\ First—In speaking of sympathy with bushrangers, we intended to convey the idea that it was only by the immediate friends and relatione of criminals that this. 6ympathy was exhibited ; and, that by a deftetire organization of the poliee system there was an antipathy \ generated between the police and the people, which'was j mistaken for sympathy with criminals. Secondly—we wished to infer that throughout the whole civilized globe there is always a certain sympathetic fegling exhibited for criminals among a certain class; resulting from a distorted mind, or ignorance; and that the interior of 2*ew South Wales is no worse than other Countries in this respect; and our legislature is to blame for not encouraging and aiding the facilities of education and religious instruction in order to counteract this evil propensit...

(to the EDjTOR of THE bega Gazbttk. ) Sir,—1 beg leave to correct a mistake in your report of-last Small Debts' Court. You stated, "Pearce v. Malcolm, promissory note; and same v. same, JJiO, promissory notewhich was''given as a settlement for balance of lime delivered for the court-house. Now, Sir, I beg to state that there was only one promissory note given, which merged into an order on Messrs. Barclay and Teas, and payable when the last instaln. - '*■ for court-bouse was placed to their credit, and which Mi Teas was willing to accept, by requesting Pearce to leave § it with him, "and he would settle it accordingly, which i Pearce would not do, for reasons known best to himself. . You stated that the defendant in both cases having become * iusolvent, and assigned his estate; which, I must say, is putting the matter in aveiy strong light. I have assigned my estate, but have not become an insolvent. You are well aware that theft; is a wide difference between a person assigning his ...

The Bega Gazette. "Quod Petis Eic Est." SATURDAY, MAY 5, 1866. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Gazette and Eden District or Southern Coast Advertiser — 5 May 1866

Cljt 35tga <©a?cttc. j "Quod Pet is lJic Eat." SATURDAY, MAY 5, I860. The port of Tarthra, is now generally used by the people in this district as a shipping port, it being a short distance from the township; the advantage of such a convenient outlet is appreciated at hist, There is, however, one great drawback to its permanency, and that is the inadequate wharf conveniences and the insecurity of the present jetty. Unless these defects are looked after and remedied, Tarthra will fade away, and all the money hitherto A spent will be so much squandered. The Government have granted for this year £10 per mile to repair the road from Bega to Tarthra; but if, through the apathy of the people, the jetifp gets washed away, Tarthra becomes once more an unsafe inconvenient harbour, then is this £10 per mile for the road a useless ^expenditure. The pr^sperity of Bega depends solely on enfergy and enterprise of the people; v Jwho if they exert themselvesand look after their own inter...

INAUGURATION OF THE STATUE OF THE LATE PRINCE CONSORT. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Gazette and Eden District or Southern Coast Advertiser — 5 May 1866

INAUGURATION OF THE STATUE ! OF THE LATE PRINCE CONSORT. | * , — j (From the Herald.) Ox Monday last was inaugurated in Sydney the statue to the memory of " Albert the Good." The tens of thousands who assembled to witness the ceremony formed the greatest demonstration that has ever taken place in the Australian colonies. St. George's Day has not previously been devoted by unanimous consent to relaxation from business, but yesterday was a close holiday. The banks and mercantile establishments did not open. The shopkeepers closed their shutters, the ships in harbour were gaily decorated with flags, aud many private citizens hung banners from their upper windows. The meeting was not oue of representatives; it was a gathering of the people, rich and poor, literate and unlearned, to do honour to the memory of a Prince who was the friend of all classes and the zealous promoter of every good work. The weather was beautifully fine, the an-angeinents of the trustees and committee were of the...
