BUTTER IN TWO MINUTES. [Newspaper Article] — Yea Chronicle — 30 July 1891

.VTTER fI TWO NiW TE3S. (BY A? OLD DAmRYMIA..) Tots is the age of inventions, and the dairying industry has come in for its due share at the hands of inventors. Recently I had the pleasure of seeing a new butter machine, the invention of Mr. R. E. Evenden, of St. Kilda, at work, and certainly, the new process seems to effect all thvat can be desired by the most critical expert in dairying. The machine itself would easily go into a box two feet square, and yet could as easily turn out half a ton of butter in eight hours. The inventor, first of all, invited us to notice the cream, which appeared to be two-days-old separator cream, and on testing it we found the temperature to be about 4S'. The little machine was then half filled, and caused to revolve by turning a handle. The cylinder was, I may say, open to the eye of the spectator, and after a few turns a perceptible change could be seen in the creat~, while the motion drove into our faces the peculiar smell of cream when tie globul...

WHOLESALE SUICIDE. [Newspaper Article] — Yea Chronicle — 30 July 1891

WHOLESALE SUOICDE. Toe present generation of mankind seems determined to proceed along the path that leads to death-the one that will kill it quickest. The struggle for existence, business worry, gambling, horse-racing, and all nervous excite ments, tend to reduce- the vital strength and insure early death. Now-a-days it is the pace that kills; the body is worn out before its natural spell of life is spent. There is no reason why all men and women phsically perfect-should not live to be centenarians, provided care was taken that the system was not over taxed in any particular direction. The symptoms of failing vitality are almost too well known to need enumeration here; first the appetite fails, with pain after eating, nervousness ensies, and sleepless or restless nights with head aches and tired aching limbs on arising in the morning; a confirmed languor or lassitude takes possession of the sufferer, who loses all interest in pleasure and even in life itself. Uin fortunately such c...

THE CASE OF CAPTAIN DUNBAR. [Newspaper Article] — Yea Chronicle — 6 August 1891

TEE 0ASE 07 C AOOIN D4N8 . CAPTAIN FREDERICK DUNBAR, late of the imperial Army, has now reached his eigty-seventh year, and has lived a life of great vicissitudes. In 1839 Captain Dunbar was invalided home after a long residence in the tropics, the Medical Board declaring that his life would be forfeited with another month's residence in that malarial climate; so. far gone was his strength that the medical men advised the sale of his captain's commission for the benefit of his sons-which,. as Captain Dunbar puts it, he very foolishly agreed to, thus losing the chance of promotion which took place so greatly during the Crimean war. Captain Dunbar has lived in Australasia for many years, and has seen some of the most stirring times known in these colonies. He has wit nessed the birth and growth of. the marvellous eityof Melbournean?wpuld have been one of AustraT!a'a.w`eftliest residents but for the unfortunate' mis carriage of remittances from Europe at the time of the first Governmen...

The Yea Chronicle. WITH WHICH IS INCORPORATED The Yea Telegraph. PUBLISHED EVERY THURSDAY. THURSDAY, AUGUST 6. 1891. LOOKING BACKWARD. [Newspaper Article] — Yea Chronicle — 6 August 1891

WIT1I WHICH IS INLCO?ORATED 'PUBLISHED EVERY THURSDAY. TH URSDA Y; A UGUST. 6. 1S91.. Os Saturday, the 2nd of August, 1890, the Yei Shire Council, as then constituted, held its fal t meeting. On that occasion the President (Cr. 31'Con nceC) had to adjourn the business three times in succession, on ac. count of the disorderly scenes which took place. The whole community felt humiliated at such scenes being enacted by their repre. sentatives, and all through the Shire the can didates were emphatically warned that such conduct must not be repeated. The public conscience was fairly aroused, and there was no mincing matters about the degradlation which such unseemly proceedings reflected upon the ratepayers. Forsome nouths after the elections there was a great improvement: the debates were more orderly, and a fair amount of considerntion was given to the spending of the large income which the Council has had at its disposal All were agreed that it was time to make a change. Various cause...

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR [Newspaper Article] — Yea Chronicle — 6 August 1891

LLTTIRS TO T=E EDIT08 SIn,-Yonrcorrespondent "Kangaroo"tried to be what Artemus Ward used to describe his Austraian pet, namely, "An amoosing little coos." out he was far more vulgar than amusing, and the best thing he can do is to put his tail between his legs and retire from writing to the newspapers. Where, I would like to know, would the A.N.A. and their high-primet, Prvis, Q.C., be if it had not been for the men of strong arms and strong intellects who, taking their lives in their own hands, pierced into all parts of Australian wilds with their flocks and herds, or their picks and shovels? To call these men "Antedilvian fosl" may be worthy of some members of the A.N.A. who make a big noise in Melbourne, and Prabran, and Richmond; but any young Australian who could be guilty of using such approbrious epithets to the men who have made this fair land of ours what it is to-day, ought to be put under the Town Pump and then flogged through the main street of Yes. The old pioneers wer...
