In our reference last issue to the ?Munro Church of England picnic and concert, to be held on Thursday next, ?. an error inadvertently crept in. We made it appear that the Church of England was holding a dance, as welL as a coneert. We have been asked toi state that this is not so. The Church committee is holding a concert only in the evening. To raise funds by a dance would be contrary to the usual practice of the Church of England,

CORRESPONDENCE. Shire Advertising. TO THE EDITOR. [Newspaper Article] — Stratford Sentinel and Briagolong Express — 19 April 1912

CORRESPONDENCE. Shire Advertising. TO THE EDITOR, ~ Sm, — I was much surprised in read ing the Sentinel to see that the Avon Shire Council had thought it better to make a change as regards their official organ. From the remarks of the Prsi dent and several other councillors I was sorry they thought it. advisable to make the change. ...Our . own local paper has done splendid work for the town of Stratford in the way of advancing its interests both of a public and private nature, in giving the community well reported information. I think, as a ratepayer, the Council should have encouraged the Sentinel by giving the Shire patronage to it. I believe the local paper printed the Shire balance sheet and reports at a much less cost than on other previous occasions and why should they leave the paper that has treated them so liberally. Under standing that the official Shire adver tisements are now given to the both Sale papers, why were they not given to the Sentinel, published in the Avon S...

In Memoriam. The Late Mrs. E. J. Swan. [Newspaper Article] — Stratford Sentinel and Briagolong Express — 19 April 1912

In Memoriam. The Late Mrs. E. J. Swan. On Sunday niorning last, at the local Anglican Church, the following ''In Me moriam ' sermon was preached by the Rev. W. T. Prentice Text: Sh. Mark, 14th chapter and part of the 8th verse 'She hath done what she could.' These gracious words of commendation were spoken by our Lord Jesus of the woman who had annointed His head with the very costly ' ointment of spikenard.' While our Lord sat at meat, in the house of Simon the leper, in Bethany, a certain woman came in, carrying a' vase, or flask, of the costliest anointing oil of antiquity, and having broken the vessel, she poured the oil over the head of her Lord. The name of the woman is not given in St. Mark's account, but in St.: John's narrative we read that her name, was Mary, and that she wa3 the sister of Martha, and Lizarus, of Bethany. She was the same Mary who sat at the feet of Jesus on the occasion of a visit of the Lord to the home of Martha and Mary, whan Martha, who was busy with ...

THE MIGHTY AMAZON. [Newspaper Article] — Stratford Sentinel and Briagolong Express — 19 April 1912

THE MIGHTY AMAZON. The mouth of the Amazon is over one hundred miles wide. Long before a ship reaches the estuary it is steam- i ing on the waters of the river, which force their way far out into the ocean. It is said that three hundred miles out at sea one can draw a bucketful of fresh water out of the ocean from the deck of a ship. Long after entering the actual river, and having its banks to north and south, one is out of sight of land, such is the breadth of the vast channel. The river flows nearly the entire width of the South American continent. Take a map of South America and look out a place called Iquitos. It lies four fifths of the way across the continent from east to west. Yet from Iquitos there is a fortnightly service of ocean going steamers to Europe, which de scend some three thousand miles of the river before they reach the ocean.

THE PEOPLE NEXT DOOR. Is is Necessary to Tell Them all Your Affairs. [Newspaper Article] — Stratford Sentinel and Briagolong Express — 19 April 1912

THE PEOPLE NEXT DOOR. Is it Necessary to Tell Them all Your Affair*. By Frances Mary Curzon. It seems to be the expected thing that one should confide all one's fam ily history to the people next door. How many, women have grown to hate those parallel back gardens, be cause Mrs. Left or Mrs. Right, or both at different times — there are two lots of next-door, you know— would be waiting to pass a few. remarks. One wants to be neighborly, of course — that's the accepted view, and that's where the trap is. It so seldom stops at being neighborly. Mrs. Left and Mrs. Right consider they have a right to your friendship merely be cause you happen to haye taken a house in the middle of them. They let out a confidence or two. And they, sooner or later, though goodness knows you had no wish to b$ the recipient of their tears and troubles, expect your confidences, your views on husbands (generally and in dividually), your ideas on the care of babies, in return. And then, too late, you know the ...
