JAMIESON. [Newspaper Article] — Kilmore Free Press and Counties of Bourke and Dalhousie Advertiser — 19 October 1865

JAMIESON.   FROM A CORRESPONDENT.     Sir,-As the reports from New Zealand are such as are likely to excite the minds of even the most stoical of our miners, I think it is your duty, as a journalist, to send forth at least a warning voice to the miners of this district not to madly abandon the certain, for the uncertain. It is not long since we have seen men, excited by reports similar to those now afloat about New Zealand, aban- don, in this very district, payable claims, and first-class "billets" to rush to New Zealand. It is almost needless for me to mention the to most of these too credulous and sanguine men. Some have perished in the wild and deso- late ranges of New Zealand, without having a human being near to speak one word of     consolation to, or pour forth a prayer for their departing spirits; others, not much more fortunate, after suffering divers pri- vations, returned to this colony disabled in every lim...

Mr. Adam Black's temporary unpopub" rity with his constituency in Edinburgh gave rise to a respectable joke. "What can have caused Adam's fall?" asked one con stituent. "The Eve of an election" was the reply. A man in the habit of travelling, com plained to his friend that hehad often been robbed and was afraid of stirring abroad; and was advised to carry pistols with him on his journey. "Oh, that would be worse," re phied the hero, " the thieves would rob me of that also." A Scotch paper aays:-"A boy named Main had been struck by a cannon ball at the Montrose battery, during practice by Kiacardine Militia, and nearly killed. Main was in the act of picking up a spent ball, when another came up and struck ~li on the side, and, after making hi?a spin round five or six times, threw him into the sea - distance of ten or twelve yards. Little hope is entertained of his recovery." Thackeray being told that an old acqu-int* anee of his, who was notorious for his love of Leer, had sailed for...

ORIGINAL POETRY. TO ERIN. [Newspaper Article] — Kilmore Free Press and Counties of Bourke and Dalhousie Advertiser — 26 October 1865

ORIGINAL POETRY. h " TO ERIN. - Erin too long, like the mist on thy mountains, a The cloud of affiction hath saddened thy t brow: i For long hath the blood stream impurpled t thy fountains, - t And pity been deaf to thy cries until. now. Thou wert doo m'd fror seasoni in, drkness to languish,. While nations aroundthiee weie baskilg in light; Scarce a sunbeam relieved the deep glbom of . thy anguish, In the " Island of Saiuts'' it seemed still to be night. The song of the minstrel was hushed' in thy bowers, For discord's dire triumph thy own harp was thrown by; While, strong as the ivy that grasped thy round towers, The gripe of oppression scarce left thee a sigh. But thy cause hath, been heard, men have wept at thy story, Alas ! that a land'of: suchl beauty should mnourn; Have her sons never. reached the high niches of glory ? Was kindness never known in their bosoms to burn ? Ay! rich- as the veins their native hills nourish, Their genius in all the fair round of the arts; And, fre...

AN UNFLEDGED CANDIDATE ON THE HUSTINGS. [Newspaper Article] — Kilmore Free Press and Counties of Bourke and Dalhousie Advertiser — 26 October 1865

AN UNFLEDGED CANDIDATE ON THE HUSTINGS. One of'the most amusing scenes anywhere during the recent elections in England oc. curred at the'nomination for Berkshire. In the last Parliament, the county was repre sented by two Liberals, Messrs. Bouverie and Walter, along with a Conservative, 3Ir. Benyon. The result of the present election is that Messrs. Walter and Bouverie are turned out, and three Conservatives got in. Besides Walter and Bouverie, the Liber.i candidate was Lord Ufingten, eldest son of the Earl of Craven. His Lordship does not seem particularly gifted with oratorical power. The Conservativ.s, with the view of justifying their doubts of his capacity, com. missioned a shorthand writer to take down verbatim the speech in which his Lordship attempted to expound his political creed on thehustings, and have it published in the Standard in order to justify their rejection of him. Lord Ufington is a captain in the Guards. The report runs thus: " Gentlemen, I am in favour of the...

TRAGEDY ON BOARD SHIP. [Newspaper Article] — Kilmore Free Press and Counties of Bourke and Dalhousie Advertiser — 26 October 1865

-. TRAGEDY ON BOARD SHIP. A frightful tram.dy has occurred on board the Fcederis Area, a three-masted merchant ship, which sailed in June, 1886, from the port of tette for Vera Cruz, having .ouboard a cargo- of vermouth, absinthe and other spirituous liquors. The commander, Cap. taia Richbourg, appears to have been a man of a remarkable mild nature; his lieutenant, M. Aubert, on the contrary, was endouwe ,ith an active and energelic temperamenr. The crew were chiefly Bretons, reciuited in different seaports; one of the men was a Corsican of the name of Orsmi. The F.e deris Area was but a few days at sea when the men conspired against the life of the first lieutenant. One evening, when, within sight of Cape Verde Islands, they agreed to make a row in the Lorocastle, which would attract MI. Aubert to that part of the vessel. IHe naturally went among them to enforce order, and was received by the men armed with cutlasses. Wounded in several places, he yet struggled manfully against the...
