King Cotton. The tenor of the article from the London Times, on the American Secession movement, which we publish on our first page, will be apt to cause considerable surprise in the South, among those who have claimed that, by producing so important an article as cotton, they could virtually control the commerce of the world. The Times cruelly dispels the delusion, by presenting the whole question in another, and a more faithful aspect, which virtually amounts to this: The people of the Gulf States have done a profitable business by selling va a very , useful article, but they have assumed such a position that they cannot be fully relied upon to furnish the necessary supplies hereafter. It by no means follows that cotton manufactories must therefore stand idle and the trade and commerce of the world be seriously deranged} for the chief effect will be that by a little extra exertion other sections of the globe will obtain the control of the lucrative business which the Gulf Stat...

Speech of Hon. Andrew Johnson. The patriotic Senator from Tennessee made another bold and thrilling Union speech yesterday, which will be hailed with enthusiasm by all Ms fellow-citizens, who are earnestly desirous of baffling the designs of those who, by breaking up this Government, a _« home and a country would leave us no more." The _jEFnion.feeling , of. the. nation is evidently rallying once more in all its mighty strength, and, while it is prompting the people of the North to deal generously and magnanimously with their Southern brethren, it is arousing the latter to a vigorous contest against the Disanion leaders, who have too long misled them. The Virginia election, and the speech yesterday of Johnsos is the Senate and _JJouldgny in the House, are significant and hopeful indications of the course of afiairs during this eventful week. If the whole American people rise up speedily to a full comprehension of the perils which environ them, and the necessity of prompt action,...

Virginia. RiCHsroHD, Va., Feb; 5.—The opinion is expressed that, while a large proportion of the delegates to the State Convention are Union men, there are very few sabmissionists among them, and that, while they will exhaust every honorable means to preserve the Union, they will demand that the rights of the South, are fully guarantied. Many express a fear that if the Peace Congress fails to effeot a settlement, the Convention may consider further exertions hopeless. These are given as _the comments of a portion of the _people of this olty, on tho result of yesterday's election. .NoRFOtg, Va , l"eb. 5,.—Henry A.
