BAD FOR ILLINOIS . [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and Livestock Weekly — 27 February 1896

BAD FOR ILLINOIS . S OME of our States have been accustomed to draw their garments closer with a holier-than-thou air when the subject of lynching was brought up . It is with shame and mortification that we record a disgraceful lynching which occurred-this week , in this free and enr lightened State of Illinois . It is evident that modern improvements , good school-houses , electric lights , churches and courts of justice do not insure the universal prevalence of Christian civilization . There are brutes , . untamed and irresponsible , in our very midst , and on some occasions they break out . The poor wretch lynched at Sullivan was held for trial on a charge of committing an atrocious crime . His guilt may have been unquestionable , but this is nc » sort of excuse for the lynching . If the courts are not to be trusted to do justice , let us have courts that can be trusted . There is the point for vigorous and intelligent action .

BOLSTER WITH A GREAT NAME [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and Livestock Weekly — 27 February 1896

BOLSTER WITH A GREAT NAME THE amusing way in which party politicians manage to assume ownership in all our greatest men is emphasized by the birthdays of Lincoln and Washington , which follow , each other so closely this month . Lincoln is spoken of as the truest Democrat since Jefferson . Washington is the representative Republican of our nation s infancy / etc ., etc . The fact is that the truly great man is greater than any party or office . Even the oihce of President , the greatest in the gift-of our nation , adds nothing to the great name of Lincoln . It is not the ^ resident whose birthday we celebrate and whose name we revere . There have been many Presidents , but only one WW ? -J * 1 S the Man > the great-souled , unselfish man , whom we love to honor and remember . To be sure , the omce gave him opportunities , the confidence of the people put responsibilities on his shoulders such as no other d £ S ^ Vt ^ b ? rne but { t was the man and not the President tnat ...

fins , Feathers and Honey Bees [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and Livestock Weekly — 27 February 1896

fins , Feathers and Honey Bees VARIETY OF FOOD . F OWLS which have a wide range do not confine themselves to com and water by any means . At night their full • crops , if opened , reveal the fact that they have sampled nearly every queer thing growing as well as many things that never thought of growing . They enjoy tender green grass as well as any cow that crops the meadow and if it Is > rather tough they manage to cut it up ; even weeds are not disdained if the grass is scanty . Last season 1 had some of my cockerels yarded for a time and it was surprising the amount of green stuff they would consume . As they had been accustomed to ranging the farm , they probably had better appetites than if they had always been confined . If I saw any green stuff going to waste I would beg that it be thrown in the yard for the cockerels until my roosters and their diet came to be a family joke . A little girl who was visiting here even sacrificed her best china doll for them . I had...

A LAST RESORT . [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and Livestock Weekly — 27 February 1896

A LAST RESORT . Kerrlck , Minn ., Nov . 17 th , 1895 . Dr . Peter Fahrney / Chicago , 111 . At the same time that I send you an order for your Dr . Peter s Blood Vitalizer ; permit me to take the liberty of saying something concerning the experience which I have had with your medicine . I had been suffering with kidney and liver complaint for over two years and tried an Incredible number of medicines and paid out large sums of money in doctors bills , etc ., without receiving any benefit . Finally , as a last resort , I concluded to send for a dozen trial bottles of your Blood Vitalizer , and to my great joy and surprise , I experienced a most remarkable improvement , even before I had consumed one-half of the trial box you sent me . I continued its use until I had taken all told , the contents of about four large bottles , when I found myself completely cured . It is now two months since I discontinued , using , . the remedy ,-and I am happy to state that I feel now as strong and h...

"ABUNDANCE . " [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and Livestock Weekly — 27 February 1896

ABUNDANCE . ¦¦ A pamphlet published under the above title by the Armour Fertilizer Works of Chicago , has been received at this office . By effective illustration , and still more effective statistics of actual results , it sets forth in a convincing manner the great advantages obtained from the use of the various fertilizing agents manufactured by this firm . The superiority of the Armour Fertilizers Is due to their production upon scientific principles , based upon an understanding of the chemistry of vegetable life . The aim has been to prepare plants foods for the particular crops whose growth is to be assisted . Such results as have been procured by actual field tests , though astonishing , are but the , natural consequence of the application of the well-known principles governing vegetable growth . The Armour Fertilizers are beyond question the best obtainable in this country , as has bsen repeatedly proven by actual experience . —A : story is told ; of three French boys who w...

FLOWERS ON THE FARM . [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and Livestock Weekly — 27 February 1896

FLOWERS ON THE FARM . I SUPPOSE a majority of farmers regard I flowers as useless and unessential , but I do hot agree . No farm is so neat , attractive and home-like as it might and should be , if it lacks beds of flowers and flowering shrubs . The object of the farm primarily and fundamentally is a home , attractive to all , a spot to leave a loving mental impression upon the mind of every child of the family as long as life lasts . Flowers are poetry arid refinement and higher culture on the farm . Do not exclude them . There are many attractive annuals and every garden should number a goodly variety ; but I would call principal atten tion to the sweet pea , as I think no other will 7 give . such uniform . and continual pleasure and satisfaction . The sweet pea has received wonderful improvement in the last few years , and covers well nigh every variety of shade and tint from pure white to deep maroon or purple , so every taste may . be : satisfied . Plant the sweet pea upon a mo...

Colony News aid Items [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and Livestock Weekly — 27 February 1896

Colony News aid Items FROM FAIR OAKS . We are now opening up a , new tract of land in our Fair Oaks settlement adjoining the townsite on the west . . This will be ready for our party of the 5 th of March . It is choice land . Those who go out with this party will get first pick . While all the land we have is good , naturally some pieces are preferable to others . , Reports from our last party who went out on the 6 th , are to the effect that all are delighted with the country , and all who were prepared to do so bought land and will make California their home . They were particularly a nice lot of people . In fact , ho one who locates at Fair Oaks will ever have occasion to be ashamed of his neighbors . WATER COMMITTEE REPORT . We have been for some time urging the colonists to appoint a committee to investigate our water system from its source twenty miles up the river down to the place where it will be delivered to the pipes which will cover the colony lands . They have finally c...
