»— SJOSW — , > ,. mi i npjsnw Swine sisss eeewn ss »——- HOG NOTES . Feeding pigs ln an open lot unless it is a considerable distance from the house , is objectionable on account of the poultry stealing so much of their food . The better plan is to have a house with a good tight floor upon which all grains can be fed with as little waste as possible . One advantage in feeding but little corn to the growing pigs during the summer is that they will do much better on a corn diet when the time comes to fatten them in the fall , as the bulky food has developed large stomach capacity and they have made bone and muscle rather than fat . When it can be done , the hogs should have the run of the bearing orchard during the summer as they will eat up all the fallen fruit and hunt out many of the grubs , etc ., which are injurious to the trees . In this way they destroy many of the enemies of small fruit and sound trees and in other ways greatly benefit the orchard . On the small farm...

She is a very different creature from the cow which saw the dawn of the nineteenth century . Yes , even fifty years ago the cow of our fathers yard had little in common with the fine specimen we call the queen of the stable today . We all know what she had in the way of ancestry . Hardly a cow in the country half a century ago could boast of a lineage worth preserving . Her care and general treatment comported well with her descent . She stood half the winter long out in the cold , shivering , hungry and a standing advertisement of the fact that her owner considered her simply an adjunct of his farm rather than his most valuable assistant . But the cow of the new century ! She opens her eyes upon a prospect most delightful to contemplate . She is recognized as furnishing the lucky man who possesses her a most desirable part of hi...

HINTS FOR BEGINNERS [Newspaper Article] — Farm Home — 1 May 1903

HINTS FOR BEGINNERS Very few people devote their time and energy to any given business , trade or profession that yields- no adequate recompense for efforts put forth . Every business enterprise , however small , requires some capital . Of course , each line of business has its own peculiarities which cannot be treated In a general way ; but there are certain underlying principles which every person should recognize and conform to if they would avoid bitter experiences that otherwise are bound to arise therefrom . The capital requisite depends largely upon the character of the business . The rearing of fowls is no exception to other business enterprises in this respect . When a person contemplates engaging in the rearing of poultry it is usually with the expectation that he will be tho gainer financially when properly handled , and there are certainly reasonable possibilities of increased profits as compared with olJtime methods . The man or woman who is erecting poultry houses , in...

PRESIDENT THEODORE ROOSE -VELT . [Newspaper Article] — Farm Home — 1 May 1903

PRESIDENT THEODORE ROOSEVELT . ( Continued from Page 5 , Col . 3 . ) have shown themselves mighty in war with their fellow-man , and mighty in strength to tame the rugged wilderness . They could not thus have conquered the forest and the prairie , the mountain and the desert , had they not possessed the great fighting virtues , the qualities which enable a people to overcome the forces of hostile men and hostile nature . On the other hand , they could not have used aright their conquest had they not in addition possessed the qualities of self-mastery and self-re-straint , the power of acting in combination with their fellows , the power of yielding obedience to the law and of building up an orderly civilization . Courage and hardihood are indispensable virtues in a people ; but the people which possess no others can never rise high in the scale either of power or of culture . Great peoples must have in addition the governmental capacity which comes only when individuals fully recogn...
