FROM AN OLD BREEDER [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 July 1910
FROM AN OLD BREEDER GEO . W . BERRY , Topeka , Kansas Type . Personalities in a discussion of this kind should be eleminated . Indulgence in acrimonious dispute causes hard feelings and strife and ends by splitting the breeders into factions , a serious matter to the welfare of the breed . For instance the contenders of the large and small types of Poland Chinas are always waring , dividing the breed and hurting business ; and similar conditions exist with Loroc Jersey breeders . Let all Berkshire breeders pull together , breed for the individual , and type will take care of itself . There should be no divergence in regard to type between the breeders of Berkshires . The breed has been particularly fortunate in being free from disputes and quarrels , and fighting clans are unknown among Berkshire breeders . The steady improvement of the Berkshire , the oldest of the improved breeds of swine , is largely due to the high ideal set forth in the standard of excellence , and loyalty to t...

In a letter regarding the Moore's Brook herd Dr . D . M . Our other young boar Masterpiece Premier 4th was one year old April 6th , 1910 . A Profitable Purchase [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 July 1910
A Profitable Purchase I wish to inform you through the lines of The Berkshire World that the "Berks" in the Seneca herd are in good thriving condition , and the get of Young Baron 4th 122671 are certainly coming on very nicely , running in an alfalfa pasture far above their backs . They are a product produced by the above State Fair winner , and mostly Royal Premier sows . Owing to the fact that their dams are royally Premier bred and their sire being strictly a Lord Premier bred fellow himself on both sides makes it a very creditable mating . I wish to say in behalf of Young Baron 4th that while at our State Fair last year , I got my eyes on this boar and I could not get them off . He suited me to perfection , and the more I thought over it , the more I thought I ought to be his owner . But Mr . E . J . Barker priced him so high I thought it no use trying to buy him at all , but all the time I knew he would help my herd , and do me lots of good . I have bred and shown Berkshires lo...

DAIRY DEP'T Caring for the Cream All that has been said against the separator has centered around the one feature that the cream from hand separated milk is inferior in quality . Those who are decrying this fact most vigorously seem to have overlooked the fact that the cream produced by this same class of farmers under any other condition would be proportionally poor . If a man will not take care of his separator he would not take care of a straight can or any other milk utensil used . In certain parts of certain states where cream separators are well nigh universally used there is no complaint about the cream received at the shipping stations . This is particularly true of the western portion of Wisconsin . This part of the state is rugged , hilly and one would naturally think poorly adapted for general farming . Nevertheless the cream coming from this section is of a high quality . One who is acquainted with conditions here will find that the prevailing source cf the water supply ...
