"The bottom hag dropped out of the cattle market" is a common re mark among producers and sales men alike, these days. The price of all classes of cattle is so low that hope soems to have fled. The clouds have hung dark and .portentous over the cattle industry ;for nearly three years, but the time lias now come when the light of truth, penetrating this blackness of darkness, will cause it to scatter as the mists give way to the glorious sunlight. ' There is no effect without a cause, either in nature or in the affairs of men. The great depression in cat tle values is traceable to a direct cause that may be easily understood and understood, easily remedied. Beginning in 1881 a tidal wave of prosperity swept over the land from one extreme boundary to the other, carrying every class of business to its acme. Everybody had money and all wanted beef. Mr. Stanton, the United States Tv"ar Min ister dyrjng the great civil jvar, had a very retentive memory, and was especially well up in Dickens' works. One evening, says a writer in Welcome, in the early part of 1SG3, Dickens, then on a reading tour in the States, was dining with Charles Sumner when Mr. Stanton and some others were present. The War Minister was put to the test, aud when started could repeat from memory a chapter of anjT of Dickens' books, showing a much greater knowledge of the ivorlrs than 'their author could boast. Mr. Stanton accounted for this intimate knowledge of Dickens bv mentioning the habit which he had formed during the war of invariably reading something by the author of '"Pickwick" before going to bed at night. "The prospect of seeing the Ni caragua canal under construction Jias awakened the people in that little understood country," said a -gentleman who has just arrived .from Central America. He has .viewed Nicaragua from ocean to ocean, and is thoroughly informed ;fon the characteristics of therepub Ifc and its people. lAs a general thing Americans .have a hazy impression that the gov eminent stays in power only by the aid of troops, and that the count rj is in a continual state of turmoil. That is far from the truth. Property is as safe thereas it is in Brooklyn for instance, and education has done a great deal to make the people ap- )reciate a settled condition of affairs ;in matters of government.
