en . w xrHlkl VOL. XXII, NO. 33. ASTORIA, OREGONrFKIDAY, AUGUST 15, 18S4. PRICE, FIYE CENTS. - -rri: ,' ii THE CLEVELAND SCANDAL. A Defense of the Democratic riislilen tinl Candidate. Buffalo, Aug. 12. The Courier prints a review of the Cleveland scandal. It says that the main charge brought by the Buffalo Tele graph is false in all essential partic ulars. "The slanderous story,'' says the Courier, "accuses Gov. Cleveland of seduction, abduction and cruelty. Evidence can be produced to disprove each, one of these charges. There was no seduction, and this statement is not based on any quibble as to the fact that the woman in the case was not a young girl, but a widow. There was no abduction. The separation of the mother and her child by the re moval of the former to an inebriate asylum, told with so much cheap pa thos, was the act of the authorities of the Buffalo orphan asylum, taken mainly in the interest of the latter. The infant had been entrusted to the care of the orphan asylum...

cv he gaity ltomtt. ASTORIA, OREGON FRIDAY- ...AUGUST 15, 1SS1 BLAINE'S FOREIGN POLICY. It must bo admitted that Mr. Blaine is not running very well in Great Britain. The newspapers of that country are generally against Lim; the great manufacturing interests do jiot view him with favor; and the bankers, merchants and speculators in stocks and produce are disposed, as a rule, to be unfriendly to him. There can be little doubt that if the election were to be decided by Brit ish votes ho would be beaten, so pre valent is the feeling that his success would be a disadvantage to British commerce and British enterprise. It has been a long time since so much interest was manifested by the press and politicians of that part of the world in one of our elections; and never before has British complacency and self-confidence been so seriously disturbed by a presidential nomina tion. Usually, our cousins over the ' sea treat our political contests with levity or indifference; but in the pres ent ...

The Son of the Theorist Detoul- His Father's Hobby. . . A. venerable-looking old gentleman, with fast whitening full beard, thick gray hair, eyes shrouded by specta cles, and the respectable dress of a well-to-do farmer, lectured at Lied " 'erkranz hall last evening. TLo old gentleman was the exponent or the most visionary of theories in regard to the Arctic "regions. He was Mr. Americas Symmes, son of John Cleve Symmes, who in 1S24, published a little book promulgating a theory. The multitude know it only in con nection with ''Symmes' Hole," the grotesqueness of that idea fastening it firmly upon the popular mind. Twenty-three people, including three reporters, were present to hear the lecture. Mr. Symmes had an nounced that it was to be upon the Qreely explorations as bearing out his father's theory. He was evident ly d...

Czi Wxt ga jtoriatu ASTORIA, OREGON: SATURDAY- AUGUST 10. 18S1 Mr. Clevetjakd liaB apparently for gotten to write bis letter of accept ance. The News suggests that the Oregon f ruit-grovrers make exhibition of their products at the great southern and southwestern expositions next fall and winter. The idea is a good one. m An old maid's club in Illinois has come out for Blaine and Logan. The spinsters argue that men whose wives caa manage them ought to be able to keep the White House free from tramps. Tekxessek Mormons seem to be out of luck. Last Sunday, several residents of Lewis county, tiring of their presence killed three Mormon elders and strongly urged the surviv ing missionaries to go back to Utah. As if starvation did not convey hor ror enough to the late Arctic expedi tion it now is clear that cannibalism and the taking of life in an effort to preserve military discipline furnished additional horrors. The whole chap ter is a frightful one and no occasion should be allowed f...

CH t attjj tovxatu ASTORIA, OREGON: SUNDAY. .AUGUST 17, 18S1 NO CAUSE FOR FRIGHT. The business outlook in a presi dental year is not infrequently unset tled, and this year as usual in the times of general elections, there are not wanting Cassandraswho prophesy ruin to the entire business part of the community. The cry of wolf has, however, been raised so often in this countryon such occasions, that it has ceased to have terrors for any save the uninitiated, some of whom are beginning to manifest a little uneasi ness in regard to the future. Upon a cool inspection of the en tire situation, there seems small rea son for any tremor in this case, since it is a matter of history that the country has been in worse financial condition scores of times ere now, and recovered before most of the population knew that anything was the matter. The imagination of an individual is often a powerful factor in promoting sickness, and men have been known to die with nothing what ever the matter save a ...

"s-r" tj Wit gaitu Syrian. ASTORIA, OREGON: THURSDAY- AUGUST 21. 16S1 PROHIBITION. With every big circus come side shows. The political side show this year is the nomination of prohibition candidates for the presidency, Messrs. St. John and DanieL Doubtless these are good men and sincere, but it is not given to the ordinary mind to understand what will be effected by their candidacy. Granting for the sake of argument that prohibition is all that its adher ents claim it to be, it is plain that nothing can be effected at this time by agitating prohibition, for the sim ple reason that the result of the elec tion for a president and members of congress can have no immediate bear ing upon the subject. To procure prohibition through the general gov ernment would require the election of a congress that would submit an amendment to the constitution of the United States prohibiting the manufacture and sale of intoxicants and, after to make that amendment a part of the supreme law of the land...
