[Populus Candicans.] . rThi's fine tree is not. found growing in a vild state io America; but as a cultivated tree it i J pretty generally dif fused over the United States. Its origin seems to be some what uncertain. Tho leaves are heart shaped at the base, ovate-acuminate, petiole flat tened in the upper part, fre quently hairy. The buds are quite large and filled through out with a fragrant resin. The - branches are terete. This .beautilul tree is not 60 large us others of the family; usually growing to the height of forty "or fifty feet, with n charming pyramidal head ol dense.anipl.?, foliage. A leaulilul purple ink is made by boiling one ounce 6i logwood, in one and half pints of soft water, and half an ounce of pulverized alum. Boil twenty minutes, strain, and botllo lor use. Keep tne air out and it will keep a long time. Asparagus. Tut the stalks into bundles, cut them the samo length, tie up with strings, and boil in hot water without salt tor three quarters of as hour. Remove the strings, and serve on but tered toast; pour orer some pressed butter, and season with pepper and tall; or the toast may bo oinilteJ, and a little vinegar added. Tho stalks must be scraped below the green head, before boiling, and kept in, water until ready to cook. Uol. A. T. M.
