OUII WASHINGTON LETTER. WASHiGTroN D. C., May, 18; 1878. The Republicans will make, are making, a mistake In attempting to conduct the comming camnpaign in the States on a strictly Aiti-Sprtlh ern basis. Even while the whotecoun try was comparatively prosperous, in 18G8 and 1872, there was not enough in the sectional question to make the election of a President certain, so, he sides that the popularity of a success ful soldier was sought and his strer gth given to the ticket. In 1L76, if the Republican platform meant the bloody shirt and proscription of soutlhern men and interests because they were Southern, the meaning was carefully concealed, but nevertheless the blppdy dy shirt was waved and toe ituBlt was defeat. Of the white vote of the country Mr. Tilden recieved three quarters of a million more than Mr. Hayes. But for the wavering Ger mans and civil service retormers brought in by Schuz, Evarts, and the others, that majority would have been much larger, and Ohio and other Sta...

OFFICIAL Paper of the Parish and City of Natchitoches JAN. H. COSGROVE, - • • Editor. SATURDAY. - - - JUNE 1, 1678. Outrageous. The Police reports of our city dai lies are burdened with the sickeni jug details of the arrest and punishment of American citizens witlwout trial by/ jury, and its flat refu!sal wlhen demand ed, for violation of the "vested rights" of the Louisiana Lottery Company. Is this not strange in this day and this hour ; in the broad blaze of the nineteenth century, and in "free America" ? That a MANx, a citizen, can be deprived of that sacred, inherent right, secured by blood-a trial by jury-for an offence charged as hav ing been committed against a giant, swindling monopoly ! Is it not strange that a great State should make itself; its Courts and law officers, the tool of a gambling hell, to punish all who violate its supposed rights ? Yet this is so ! Day after day these details fill our daily papers while the Democrat, that noble journal, dear to every honest L...

The New York Sun and Tribune 0 stand in remarkable juxtaposition in t their crasade upon the South. The r Bus slanders us because it feared we would refuse to support the Potter resolution, and the Tribune denouno ces as as "rebele" and "dishonorable 0 men" for doing what the Sun de- t manded was required of us. In God's name what are we to do to please these "Anthony Absolutes"'' I They are certainly equal representa tives of the "stalwart" opinions of the Northern section, and we cannot for the life of as see how we are to I please one without "mad'iog t'other." The South is pretty well used to the frothy fosmings of the Tribune and we beg in all candor to inform that journal that we need not its as sistance in preserving our "honor."'' We have given assurance in more ways than one that we were fully able to protect it fr...

OFFICIAL Paper ofthe Parish and City ofNatchitoches JAS. H. COSGROVE, .. Editor. SATURDAY, - - - JUNE 15, 178. The Tramp of the Army. We are told, and by such authority as to render it fully creditable, that certain Districts in the South. are to be selected for the tramp of the sol dier the coming campaign. Among these are named two in Louisiana. We are fully prepared to believe that the Republicans of the North intend to use the army as indicated, and we warn the Democratic House to stand by their clause in the appro priation bill, for if they do not, blood shed will result. This may be startling to the timid, but it's true, nevertheless. We, of the South, are free Americans or we are nothing, and we intend to assert that freedom from this time forward. In 1874, Grant's Cavalry raided down ,this section and arrested innocent citizens by the score, in order to in timidate and drive them from the polls. Let that raid be repeated; let Hayes dare send his cavalry or his infantry on a ...
