SATURDAY. OCTOBER 10, 1863. FAR)IEKS' DEPARTMENT. Galls on Horses. ' "Th merciful man ia merciful lo bis beasts." It is much to be regreted that the necessity aud the duty of care and kindness to the injured borees, should not be more deeply impressed upon the public mind. We are daily pained to eee, upon the breast and shoulder a of horses employed upon the canals, the most revolting exhibitions of lacerated flesh, caused by the harness. To subject to service a helpless animal, under such circumstances, is more than cruel, it i- barbarous. A vast proportion of this in jury and suffering, we think entirely need ls. that is, it might easily have been greatly mitigated, or wholly avoided. I Lave twice, wiihin a few years past, publish ed a remely for galls on horses, and ur gently invited attention to it, on the part of those who might be interested; but fear the advice has not been heeded. When a young horse is first broken t) the harness, or when a horse accustomed to the harness ha...

, SATURDAY, OCTOBER- 17, I8G3. SARRATII IN THE COUNTRY. The Sabbath is the White Day of the -week; Its sky serene tlio blandest of the seven. How sweet its air, unstained by labor's smoke. Filled with the sound of many chiming bells, . That gravely speak from consecrated towers! Sweetday of reat. designed for man and beast. When the lired ox in the still pasture feeds. And the unharnessed steed his freedom knows. And every creature speaks ita quiet joyf I love the soft chant of its unyoked streams, Their music blending with the village choir Past yonder silent mill their wavelets glide, In ripples of delight, toward the eea That crowns with foam the nurslings of the hills, Where shining shells with roseate lips invite The waves to worship on the waiting shore.
