Incidents of War -- The most touching incident in the great storming of Monterey,is related in an extract from a letter, published originally, we believe, in Louisville (Ky.) Journal, The lines attached are clipped from another paper. Camp Monterey, Oct. 7, 1846 Hungry and cold, I crept to one corner of the fort to get in the sunshine and at the same time shelter myself from the bombs that were flying thick around me. I saw her lift the head of one poor fellow, give him water, and then take the hankerchief from her own head and bind up his wounds; attending one or two others in the same way, she went back for more food and water. As she was returning, I heard the crack of one or two guns, and she, poor good creature, fell; after a few struggles all was still - she was dead ! I turned my eyes to heaven and thought, "Oh God, and this is wa...

> in a Boston paper.] [Newspaper Article] — California Star — 20 November 1847

[From a Boston paper.] Mexican Narrative of Events at the Heroic City of Vera Cruz, while beseiged by the American Army. We publish the following "Narrative," not that we think it is a truthful version of what actually took place at Vera Cruz, but because it is the Mexican account, embellished and exaggerated, as is their usual custom, and we desire to present it to our readers. There were undoubtedly much suffering and many hardships endured, but they are not chargeable to the American commander, Gen. Scott, but to the obstinate Governor of Vera Cruz, who refused to come to terms, and refused to take any steps for the safety of the women and children, although Gen. Scott directly made the last proposition a vital one in the discussion. To the Mexican military authorities of: the city are the injuries to the property and the suffering and sacrifice of life to be attributed, Gen. Scott merely did what was his duty. Lrra than that he could not do. If he had not done that and had succo...

Thanksgiving We learned with pleasure that a portion of our fellow citizens met in a convivial Thanksgiving, lately at which they had a joyous time. This has whet the appetites of the remainder, for the enjoyment of a good dinner and fandango. And NOTICE is herby given to all those who did not partake at the late festive board and wish to participate in the scenes of another, that a meeting will be held at the City Hotel, on Monday evening next, for the purpose of making arrangements to get up a General Thanksgiving. MANY CITIZENS OF CALIFORNIA. (Next Column) SANTA CRUZ. Nov. 10, 1847. To the Editor of the STAR: Dear Sir, To-day a most brutal affair occurred among us. An Irishman by the name of Colligan had rented his grist mill to Mr. William Anderson -- a very excellent and quiet man of our town -- and it seems after he had done so, resorted to drink, to manifest his feeling at the event, and became intoxicated. In this state he went to the mill, and, trying every means his tongue...
