All Sorts. [Newspaper Article] — Los Angeles Herald — 28 October 1873

All Sorts. If a man marries a ballet-dancer will his children have a step-mother? Somebody gives the definition of nowhere—A place where no Yankee has ever been, and never will be. A Western congregation recently discharged their pastor because of his "inordinate consumption of beer." "Salts of demoniac" was recently culled for in a country store in western Massachusetts. The apothecary filled the bill with a pint of New England rum. Notice having been given that "honeymoon cars" are to he run on the Pacific Railroad, the CourierJournal suggests that divorce ears be added to all trains lending to Chicago und Indianapolis. We have heard of men traveling on their muscle and on their shape, but from the fact that there has been a scull race on the Harlem river we conclude that they are now trying to travel on their head. "Doctor,'' said a man to Abernethy, "my daughter had a tit, and continued for half an hour without sense or knowledge." "Oh," replied the doctor, "never mind that; man...

Los Angeles and Santa Barbara. [Newspaper Article] — Los Angeles Herald — 29 October 1873

Los Angeles and Santa Barbara. Los Angeles has a hundred dollars of capital where Santa Barbara has a hundred cents. She has contiguous territory sufficient for a small State, coursed by three rivers, with soil capable of the highest and most perfect productions, such as orange, lime, lemon, walnut aud almond; while Santa Barbara has much less territory at her back, without a river traversing it. Though her soil is of good quality, it is not capable of the highest class products, except the walnut and almond. Admit them equal in climate, iv natural wealth, resources and capabilities, Santa Barbara is miniature to Los Angeles. To those who are fond of the sea-coast Santa Barbara has advantages in climate and scenery superior to ours. To those who desire a little more sunlight, who desire to be a little removed from the ocean-fog and wind, and who delight in orange groves, Los Angeles has superior claims. Both places, with their respective advantages, are neceaaary for Southern Califo...
