This isn’t Sprinsock’s first CCS meet. In fact, the 5-foot-5 blonde has been competing at CCS since she was a freshman thanks to her Cabrillo Threshers club coach, Jim Triplett, who submitted her otherwise translucent times from dual meets for CCS consideration. She swam the 100 butterfly and the 50, 100 and 200 frees in previous editions of the section meet. She earned her first trip to the finals last year, when she placed 14th in the 200. Today, Sprinsock will try to really steal the spotlight when she swims both at the CCS Swimming and Diving Championships at Santa Clara International Swim Center. She qualified for the consolation finals in the 200 and the finals in the fly during the CCS trials Friday afternoon. She will be one of 10 county athletes who will compete today. “I’m excited but really nervous,” Sprinsock said.“ I’m seeded really high in one event I almost never swim.” 1 minute, 57.64 seconds and also claimed the 100-yard breaststroke — an event she rarely competes i...

SAN FRANCISCO Best Buy to debut Net video service A few times, I used the built-in dictate feature instead of typing, which is mostly good for a laugh. Every time I pressed a key, the screen vibrated a little, giving me some physical feedback. I used Google’s Android market to download applications for such diversions as instant messaging, taking Polaroid-esque photos and tracking my finances. The apps downloaded quickly in the background, while I continued browsing. But you could still invest in a CD—and take advantage of any rate hike—by opting for "bump up" or "rising rate" CDs, which typically give investors one shot to boost their original rate if interest rates for that product go up. The new rate would apply to the time remaining on the CD's term. "It pays for investors to be aware of these options, particularly when interest rates are at such a low level and poised to increase at some point," says Greg McBride, senior financial analyst for Bankrate.com. One caveat: These CDs could offer starting rates that are lower than a regular CD's, he says. That can hurt you if interest rates take longer than expected to rise or don't go up as much...

as with every other dream, there's the money issue: How could we pay for it? Would we have to sell our house? Would Dad quit his job? Could we do something along the way to pay for part of it? But how would I keep up with school? Would I be a year behind when I came back? And So I have started to ask myself: Do I want to do it? Since I like history, particularly early Western history and paleontology, it would be interesting for me to learn more about these cultures while seeing the modern places. Plus, I love to travel. Still, as so often happens, Dad's enthusiasm about his idea makes me wonder if this time, just maybe, he might be serious. He does talk often about how experiences are more important than material things, and this would be an experience on a mammoth scale. And he has mentioned it a lot more than some of his other never-will-happen ideas. This seemed like just another one of his strange ideas that I assumed would never go anywhere—if for no other reason than my dad's...
