. M ammunitiotij'wcrc destroyed. Another fort still was captured making a total of 870 guns destroyed- This prompt action on the part of the British brought the Chi- nese to tarms. A treaty was made hut the Chinese functionary still hesitated when Sir John threatened the city of Can ton. Finally the Chmosc promised to punish the rioters and stop the pirctos and the war was suspended for the time being. The citizens of Canton wore much alarmed and had commenced mov- ing into the interior. The French for many years hare had loud cause of complaint for the treatment received by their missionaries in China. They were thrown into prison and other wise illy treated. Two French ships of I war sailed into the bay of Toman to ob- tain redress. The officer commanding discovered a riot asainst him and his command and opened on the Chinese war iunks and corvettes.
