JOURNALISTIC ENTERPRISE EXTRAORDINARY. [Newspaper Article] — Evelyn Observer, and South and East Bourke Record — 27 July 1883

JOURNALISTIC ENTERPRISE . ' EXTRAORDINARY. : (FROM TIIE AUSTRALABIAN, JULY 14.) 'Wa do not usually concern ourselves albout the way in which our contempor aries manage their own affairs. But a case has just occurred in view of which we feel ourselves called upon to depart from this rule. We do so because the case is one which invelves a piece of deliberate, though rather clumsy, de ception practised on the public. In the interests of journalistic good faith it is desirable that the facts should be placed before the public, and it will be found that they are not wanting in a comic elemaent, not inappropriate 'to a newspaper which aspires to play the part of a press Jeremy Diddler at the expense of its unsuspecting readers Some months ago we announced the despatch of our agricultural reporter, Mr. T. K. Dow, to America to write a series of papers on American farming, in the interests of the Australian farmer. The procedure was an open one, anld no secret or mystification was made of t...

SMALL CHANGE. [Newspaper Article] — Evelyn Observer, and South and East Bourke Record — 27 July 1883

S.ALL CHANGE. Writing of Louth, on theo Darling, the Regqister -reporter says:-Small clhange appears to be scarce here, the general currency being notes atnd cheques, and this I found rather awkward in a strange place. Wishing thn make a few purchases I entered a store, got what 1 wanted, and tendered i pound note in payment. The young man in charge of the counter ranaacked the; till,' but could out find change enough, so 1 was politely told I could look in again anid pay. I thought this very kiiid treatment, and determined not to abuse the confidence reposed in me, bult' get out' of debt at once. I therefore entered an adjacent " pub" with a friend to have a glass of water diluted, and tried the note again, but without success, so I was under the 'Iaiietiel necessity of "sticking ujl" the lriikso., I then went to another store, purchased something I had no earthly use for' in the hopes of getting rid of imy bit of'paper, alnd was met with the polilo request to look in again and pay...

ýýe ýGelbeht Qdscrucr, Published Ecer~y Fr'idy. FRIDAY, JULY 27, 18831. WE have been favoured with the perusal of what we'take to be a circular letter issued some time ago from the Board of Advice of the North Riding of Eltham to the head-teachers of all the State schools under their supervision to the effect that the said Board of Advice purposed holding a competitive examination at Christmas next, and giving prizes to the success ful competitors and expressing a hope that all the schools in their district would be repre sented. We must complimdnt the said Board in taking the initiative in this matter, and hope to see many other boards' follow the example set them; in fact, we consider the matter to be of such importance that we are rather surprised it was not brought forward at the late conference of Boards of Advice and steps initiated to make the movement general throughout the colony; even if' they had to ask the Government for a grant of money in aid, it would be money well la...
