A "Committee of Agitation." [Newspaper Article] — Narromine News and Trangie Advocate — 31 March 1899

' A 'Committee of Agitation.' ' In Berlin It seems they have a curious, and probably an antiquated, law which pitaMbits ' women, scholars, and ap prentices' from belonging to any political society (says the 'Daily News'). Having no fear of the ridiculous before their eyes, the magistrates have lately had the hardihood to apply it by fining a number of women convicted of this heinous offence. The women had sought emancipation In the usual way by form ing a ' Committee of agitation' for equal electoral privileges, and, as they scorned to make the slightest mystery of It, the court bad little to do but send in its bill. The defendants, however, did not yield without a struggle. They offered the ingenious plea that, while they were a committee in name, they were but an aggregate of. Individuals In act and deed, and consequently were not associated within the meaning of this very curious law. The court probably argued that so much subtlety boded deadly danger to the State in the new clai...

Vagrant Notes. [Newspaper Article] — Narromine News and Trangie Advocate — 7 April 1899

Vagrant Notes. Mostou's new hotel, opposite the Railway Station, besides being a nota ble addition to the architecture of tbe town, is a pretty substantial proof of the owner's confidence in the future 'oi tlie district. The new building, which is of two stories, is most elaborately finished throughout, and the accommo dation ample lor many years to come. One pleasant feature is the noble bal cony, a great desideratum on our hot summer nights, a comfort that will doubtless be much appreciated by the patrons of the hotel, iha enterprise of the proprietor and his consideration for the comfort uf his customers, is further marked by the faitTof the new illuininant, Acetylene gas, being in stalled throughout the house. The light, whilst being much more brilliant than kerosene, possesses the additional great advantage of giving out u minimum of heat, whilst its economy is undoubted. We wish the proprietor, Mr. A. Moston, the success his enterprise deserves. *?? In company with a few kindr...

TO [?] EDITOR OF THE NARROMINE NEWS. [Newspaper Article] — Narromine News and Trangie Advocate — 7 April 1899

To t^k Editoe of Tire Kaubomise News. Sir; — Yonr last issue contained mi attempt by a scribe digressing above the aboriginal 110m dn plume of ' Boomerang.' I describe it us au sttempt having 1.0 other word applic able to baud. It was an attempt He who concocted it must have boen^at the time either in a state of k n Compos mentis consequent upon a lengthy debauch, or elso a l;it-liPaiied 'school-boy uotv taking up his pen for the first time. If he were iu the former state it is to be hoped that when he saw the attempt in print it soared him snuiuiintly to cause him to abjure any ihiug stronger than milk in future. Those two words ilone at its con clusion, viz., ' me first ' denote that lie was iu a state of childish imbecility bordering on idiocy, while concocting the remarkable peroation which has the synonymous appellation for ii litera'e affixed. Presumably ms locus standi is not very great, not sufficient at any rate to warrant his observa tions on those much abused gentlemen, o...

TOWN HALL SITE. To ihk Editok oh tiie Nabhouike News Silt, — Alderman Walker having deemed fit to disclaim in your last issue any intention to do othorwise than act in the best interests of the Munici pality, I would like to ask thu very pertinent question, ' Who ever b.us ppctcd that the gentleman intended to do otherwise, and wherefore should he think fit to liavo to publicly declare pn ?' — adopting the adage, QUi s'excuse s'a.ccgse, — itseems tint Alderman Wal ker's imagination has carried him to such extremities fls to make him be lieve that tlie mnltiludo are now dis cussing the fact that he was once tbe proud owner of a certain tavern, and that he has now parted with that ? ownership, and, in consequence, br- hssuo interests to serve in advocating any particular site for a Town Hall.
